We got a set of trashcans for a gift that we will not use. Its the HDX brand that came from Home Depot. I don't have a receipt or gift receipt. Odds they give me a store credit for returning it?

They'll give you a store credit for what they currently sell for.

If you bought it with a credit card, you shouldn't have a problem. I returned a lawn mower last year that was 27 days old without a receipt. They keep all of the information in their system.
Now, if you paid with cash, there probably isn't a lot of hope.
ETA: Just saw that you said it was a gift. The same standard should apply, but I don't know.

I saw a guy return a muddy shovel with no receipt. They took it back.

My dad recently retired and took a job as a cashier at Home Depot. Said he hates working returns because of their policy. Has to take anything back so OP should be good with the trash cans.
Be careful though, they do have security guards there and will get a picture of you if you are a repeat offender or they believe the merch to be stolen.

My friend's wife got one for a wedding gift when they got married several years ago. She was not too pleased with the gift.

So my friend's wife is not alone. She should be proud she received a gift which she could actually use (or exchange for something else).
