In the fall of 2008, when I was 11 years old, I wrote to the CEO of McDonald’s and asked him to change the way his stores sold Happy Meals. I expressed my frustration that McDonald’s always asked if my family preferred a “girl toy” or a “boy toy” when we ordered a Happy Meal at the drive-through. My letter asked if it would be legal for McDonald’s “to ask at a job interview whether someone wanted a man’s job or a woman’s job?”

quote:

While this notice does not ensure that all McDonald’s locations will stop treating a kid differently because of his or her gender, it’s a start. The problem with Happy Meal toys may seem trivial to some, but consider this: McDonald’s is estimated to sell more than 1 billion Happy Meals each year. When it poses this question—“Do you want a boy’s toy or a girl’s toy?”—McDonald’s pressures innumerable children to conform to gender stereotypes. Retailers don’t need to use girl’s and boy's categories when they can just describe the toys that are available and let kids choose the ones that appeal to them most. After all, that’s been McDonald’s stated corporate policy for the last five years.

Kid sounds like a pussy. My 6 year old niece could probably kick his/her 11 year old arse.

I'm shocked a liberal, ambiguously-gendered, Slate-reading child would eat at McDonald's.

Yeah. In a giant f'u to the pussies whining about such things, McDonalds should just start referring to them as "feminine and masculine" toys.

Boys toys show up as "truck toy" on the screen when you order. Dunno about girl toys.

Yea well McDonalds has some serious issues with their toys. My g/f got a happy meal and I requested the boy toy because it was Ninja Turtles.

Yea well.....I got a Yugioh toy. This is some BULLPOO man. Frick the golden arches.

They should be thankful to be given a choice. Most places don't and you're stuck with what you get.

Hell, they almost always screw it up anyway. i can't count the times we'd get a quarter mile down the road only to hear a war cry from the backseat because they could not get the boy or girl toy thing right.

Think of the Bronies, man! How are they supposed to complete their My Little Pony figurine collection without having to admit they want a girl toy?!?

Honestly, it doesn't matter to me. I have a boy and 2 girls, and sometimes order happy meals for myself without them. I always pick whatever toy is cooler or will add to one of their collections. My girls have sometimes chosen the boy toy too, although son doesn't really get into the more girly stuff. Gender stereotypes don't bother me, because I hope I've raised them with the ability to think and choose for themselves no matter what others try to direct them to.

I remember getting a happy meal and it came with a little Shawn Micheals action figure. I guess it was for girls because when I pressed the button on his back it would say "I'm not your boy toy boyyyyy toyyyyyyy"

I think that people in this day in age whine about too much insignificant shite.

They are asking you to choose between two toys. Pick the one you want. It's not that f*cking difficult.

If you're offended that Mcdonald's thinks that you as a boy would want a truck or you as a girl would want a doll, then you're going to have one hell of an adult life.

Just another example of someone wanting the majority to cater to the minority because their feelings are hurt. Get over it.
