Uh oh: It appears ethanol in fuel offers no benefit

Never saw this coming.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released two of its Working Group reports at the end of last month (WGI and WGIII), and their short discussion of biofuels has ignited a fierce debate as to whether they’re of any environmental benefit at all.
The IPCC was quite diplomatic in its discussion, saying “Biofuels have direct, fuel-cycle GHG emissions that are typically 30–90% lower than those for gasoline or diesel fuels. However, since for some biofuels indirect emissions—including from land use change—can lead to greater total emissions than when using petroleum products, policy support needs to be considered on a case by case basis” (IPCC 2014 Chapter 8).
quote:
The International Institute for Sustainable Development was not so diplomatic, and estimates that the CO2 and climate benefits from replacing petroleum fuels with biofuels like ethanol are basically zero (IISD). They claim that it would be almost 100 times more effective, and much less costly, to significantly reduce vehicle emissions through more stringent standards, and to increase CAFE standards on all cars and light trucks to over 40 miles per gallon as was done in Japan just a few years ago.

Why stop at 40 mpg? Let's go ahead and make it 80 mpg for all cars and "light trucks". That'll save planet earth twice as fast.

ethanol is one of the worst things the government wastes money on.

Emissions, lol. Why not address how destructive it is on fuel systems and engines.
Not to mention it only has a shelf life of 30 days.

Changed it up a tad.

This..that shite is so corrosive that it can't be pipi elined. Must be rail car or trucked everywhere. Real fuel efficient there. Eats up fuel lines, eats up outboards, cost me 2 mpg in my older truck. Shits awful. Raised food costs now that our food supply is in a bidding war for corn. Great idea.

I've been running ethanol free in my truck and small cycle engines around the house for about two years. It's about 23-28 cents a gallon more expensive than the corn gas. I'll admit that I'm only putting about 3-4 hundred miles a month on my truck so the extra cost doesn't hurt too bad.

But I thought there was a "consensus" that it is beneficial?
That's how science is advanced now isn't it? frick the scientific method, that's a white European construct. "Consensus is the way to go!

Let's just hope that the percentage of corn in gas doesn't get much higher. Here in Ark. the going percentage is 10%. I asked my service manager about how this might affect my Tundra if it were to go up. He said my '03 engine was built to run on up to 12% without any engine problems. He said anything over 12 - I got problems.

Yep. I get 32 mpg with ethanol free gas and 28 with the Bushbama gas.
Of course, ethanol being worthless is Germans.

Yep. Wait until the government mandates 15% in the near future

A coalition of environmentalists, meanwhile, is calling for the biofuel to be phased out altogether. The groups, which include the Clean Air Task Force, Environmental Working Group, and Friends of the Earth, say the U.S. ethanol standard should remain at current levels and then be lowered gradually - unless the fuels can be guaranteed to meet "minimum environment, health, and consumer protection standards."
A bunch of flat earthers in here. Doesn't everyone know the science is settled?

ETOH production is only in place to help midwestern farmers, especially the big conglomerates like ADM and Cargill. They spend big money on lobbying Washington DC to pass legislation forcing consumers to use ethanol.

It'll be VERY interesting to see where the 2016 GOP Presidential contenders stand on this issue. The corn-ethanol lobby went pretty hard after Perry in Iowa last primary season.
