I found this story today and honestly, I plead that I didn't know about it(which is shameful really).

Of course, even in that day, true to form, the NYT was not a big fan of those crazy people in fly over country.

A key paragraph, not matter what you think of what happened, is the following. After the initial attack on the strikers,
quote:
In Denver, the United Mine Workers issued a “Call to Arms”—“Gather together for defensive purposes all arms and ammunition legally available.” Three hundred armed strikers marched from other tent colonies into the Ludlow area, cut telephone and telegraph wires, and prepared for battle. Railroad workers refused to take soldiers from Trinidad to Ludlow. At Colorado Springs, three hundred union miners walked off their jobs and headed for the Trinidad district, carrying revolvers, rifles, shotguns.
Of course, even in that day, true to form, the NYT was not a big fan of those crazy people in fly over country.
quote:
The Times emphasis was not on the atrocity that had occurred, but on the mistake in tactics that had been made. Its editorial on the Ludlow Massacre began: “Somebody blundered …” Two days later, with the miners armed and in the hills of the mine district, the Times wrote: “With the deadliest weapons of civilization in the hands of savage-mined men, there can be no telling to what lengths the war in Colorado will go unless it is quelled by force … The President should turn his attention from Mexico long enough to take stern measures in Colorado.”

Well heck. I thought that while obviously different than some current goings on, this story might be of interest on the Poli board.

The thing that stands out to me is me. This is the first time I've ever heard of this. Maybe I don't read enough or either government has a long arm as to what gets printed in our history books.

It was not discussed much at all in history books in my time...
I like the read how the railroad men refused to transport..
Using government forces to back business is not a good thing and using more force than what was needed including taking out the tent homes with wives and children.
Looks like Waco style with the overkill no pun intended.

Thanks for posting this. I also hadnever heard of this situation. I think the government had the benefit of the internet not existing in those days. Information flows so freely now that they wouldn't be able to silence such a situation.

IE, internet or no, the more things change, the more they seem to stay the same.

Ah the glory of union busting. While I no longer think unions have much use in 21st century America. In 20th century America they were needed.

Not sure when your time was, but if it was in HS US history, the labor movement was covered in every text I have seen, but every single labor/socialist/anarchist incident can't be covered.
If you want to know more you need to read a book.

It could be if business is being attacked in revolution. The regime has a right to defend itself.
I'm sure Howard Zinn is providing an objective view of the opposing sides.

I'm a capitalist, but I do know about the very dark side of capitalism. I've worked with industrial assholes who would have no trouble housing workers in trailers in the back lot and feeding them in a big tent.

Far from an isolated incident. Happened in the coal fields of Kentucky and Pennsylvania, too. Read up on the Harlan County War. People rail against Unions, often with good reason, but it's instructive to know how and why they came about, and that there was a time when they literally were the only entity standing up for ordinary workers against a power structure that could, and sometimes did, shoot them down in cold blood.

Oh I believe Unions were VERY necessary when industrial America was all about exploited the workers.
Now, not so much.
Some shitty things happened during the rise of corporations in this country.
