Baton Rouge Metro Councilman Ryan Heck said late Thursday afternoon he’s learned the Mayor’s Office is also close to securing a petition for annexation from the Mall of Louisiana and properties that currently separate the mall from the city limits.

The mall, which is located in Heck’s district, is one of the most important sales tax revenue generators in the parish. If the mall is annexed by the city, it could prove a mortal blow to efforts to form a new city of St. George.

Now where have I heard this idea before.....???

Oh, yeah.....here, 3 months ago.

For the record, I plan to vote against the incorporation; however, this "attack" will have all sorts of ill consequences.

In addition to the ill will this will engender, it will be interesting to see how BR's fire rating will handle all the additional coverage area (attacks well as the additional LEO responsibility).

Of course, what will really cause a problem will be these areas no longer being tax generators for St. George and Eastside, further fricking over the people in St. George.

What attack?

The additional fire property taxes that are only paid by city property owners will probably pay for a new fire sub-station just for the Mall and Perkins Rowe area.

Pathetic that it took the St. George movement to get the city to annex areas that should be part of the city anyway.

You've got the process a little backwards.

It took the SG movement to get those property owners to want to be annexed into BR. BR can't annex an area without the property owners asking to be annexed.

Not about SG but I'm wondering why a Town Centre and surrounds aren't inside the city and why they don't want in.

I think I may have posted this before, but this is from an article in the Business Report from October 2012, regarding annexation LINK:

quote:

Before Towne Center was developed several years ago, cattle roamed through an expansive wooded area, and city services were an afterthought. “There was no real reason to ask for it to be annexed in the city limits,” says former property owner Phil Witter, whose family's Live Oak Arabians stables is nearby.

Today, the development receives access to CATS and at times Baton Rouge Police, but does not pay taxes specific to the city.

Towne Center developer Stephen Keller was apparently unaware of a benefit of annexation: cheaper fire insurance.

Even though Towne Center is primarily serviced by EBPSO & St. George FD, they also get response from both BRPD & BRFD because of their unique location.

quote:

That overlap gives Towne Center less incentive to get annexed, says Witter: “The lines have blurred.”

Another interesting tidbit in that article is a quote from Ryan Heck at the time, who seemed like he was pro-annexation of some areas, unlike now:

quote:

“It doesn't make a lot of sense to have these large areas in the center of town that aren't in city limits,” says Metro Council candidate Ryan Heck, who is running unopposed in District 11; incumbent Alison Gary is not seeking re-election. “Maybe we should look at incorporating some more territory—the things that make sense.”

I notice you did not address the impact on St. George and Eastside

I know the two of you have a history (particularly concerning St. George), but you, LSURussian, seem to love/are often limited to responding to challenging questions and/or opposing ideas with insults and evasive responses.

Are you a U.S. Senator?
