More bad news for St. George...

Mall of Louisiana, Baton Rouge General are in talks with city of Baton Rouge about being annexed
By Diana Samuels, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

The Mall of Louisiana and Baton Rouge General Medical Center are in talks with the city of Baton Rouge about being annexed into the city, Metro Council member Ryan Heck confirmed Thursday.

Those properties are currently in unincorporated East Baton Rouge Parish. If they are annexed, the loss of the mall's tax revenue could have a major impact on the effort to incorporate the new city of St. George and the proposed municipality's budget. The mall is a major sales tax revenue generator for the parish, and annexing Baton Rouge General's Bluebonnet campus would give the city a path to make the annexation contiguous.

I have no skin in this game but it seems like there's a lot of desperation to keep St. George from incorporating.

Why is that?

It's all about sales tax revenue. But it appears the potential St. George incorporation is dead in the water at this point.

None of the big business developments that would make St, George feasible want any part of it.

St. George can just build a new mall and the city can keep the MOL

It's their right. Just as it is St. George's citizenry to vote on what they'd like to do.

But make no mistake, there's a definite reason that BR doesn't want St. George to become a reality. I wonder what these businesses are being promised-or threatened-with or by in order to do this?

Sad that the kids will end up caught in the no man's land while the grown ups toss acquisitions and go on witch hunts.

For what the public knows?

Because it would hurt both "cities." Baton Rouge relies on the City-Parish staying whole for tax revenue.

St. George relies on Baton Rouge for infrastructure.

The biggest reason these companies give for annexation is "we'd rather deal with what we know" which should tell you all you need to know. The leaders of St. George have given almost no specifics for how their city would be set up, what their new taxes would be (they do at least acknowledge there will be new taxes), how many new schools they'd have to build and how long that would take.

The only thing St. George has really said is that they'll have enough money and they say that because of The Mall, Celtic, L'Auberge. Well, all three of those will be annexed, so affectively St. George is a done deal no matter what.

Privately

Everyone should know that large Businesses get started because someone, somewhere, greased the wheels to get them going. Those people who did that are all part of Baton Rouge through a few organizations.

Baton Rouge, the Metro Council, the Parish and various other organizations affiliated with them have invested incredible amounts of time and money to get businesses like Costco, L'Auberge, MOL, etc to set up shop here.

They are protecting their investment by fighting against St. George. Likewise, the businesses themselves are protecting their investment by "sticking with what they know."

I'm pretty active on this topic because although I am close with both sides, this board (which is certainly known for its foolishness regardless) has really outshined itself when it comes to ignorance of a particular topic. This whole thing is basically a group of greedy businessmen who couldn't get into the cool BR Business club fighting against the old established cool BR Business club. It's never had anything to do with regular people, and it has already gone a long way toward showing the strength of the Baton Rouge business community.

If this actually happened, Mall of Louisiana would become Cortana Part II. It's already halfway there.

I'd imagine that if St G happens, there'll eventually be a well thought out Perkins Rowe-esque place built in it.

The life cycle of a mall, at least wherever [message redacted]. That's obvious.

from this story

'The U.S. government is killing our innocent civilians, but most of you already know that… I can’t stand to see such [bullet hole] go unpunished,' the hand-scribbled note obtained by ABC News says.

Malls in general are becoming irrelevant. They are depressing places and more and more people are choosing to shop elsewhere. It is something that the baby boom generation loved but the younger generations have grown to hate.

You are very correct sir. One thing you didn't add is that they are making a parish wide fire dept.. it would be like the sheriff dept. St Georges chief doesn't want to lose his dept/job. He was a big hand in starting all of this. In reality it never was for the "children".

The whole "St.George" thing was about greed, not need.

Maybe, but BR has become a complete shite hole and almost everything nice is ruined by a big part of the population that has no regard for other people. It'd be nice to see some kind of change.

I don't really care one way or another, but when I see people (BR) trying to strong arm other people (SG) into NOT exercising their rights...my immediate response is to side with those wanting to be free.

BR sucks and will continue to suck as long as sucky people run it.

Actually, they don't. The SG official website states "Taxes shouldn’t have to be raised to support a new city."
