I think it'll be awkward when Pujols hits his 500th homerun in Anaheim

Considering how poor his offensive output has been since leaving STL, it's just going to be hard to imagine Angels' fans giving him the respect he deserves.

Even the media is being brutal about the coming milestone:

USA Today article on Pujols

quote:

Here we are, on the brink of one of the most magnificent milestones in all of sports, and it seems nobody cares.

quote:

Just 25 men in Major League Baseball history have ever hit 500 homers in their lifetime, and here's Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols ready to join them after hitting No. 496 on Monday night.

Yet it's getting all of the acclaim of an NBA triple-double.

What has happened to us?

"I don't know what has happened.'' Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson tells USA TODAY Sports. "It should be front and center. There have almost been 18,000 players who have played our game, and only 25 have hit 500 homers.

"We've had a string of power hitters achieve the mark in the past decade, but that shouldn't diminish how big of a mark it really is.

quote:

"I think we all thought Albert had a chance to hit 700 homers after seeing what he did in St. Louis,'' says McGriff, "but it's been tough for him out in L.A. Maybe that's why he's not getting the attention.

"I'm sure if he was still in St. Louis, they'd be blowing it up pretty good out there.''

So he went from great to good, his numbers still suggest he is one of the better 1B in MLB. His early production was just historically great what he does now pales in comparison.

A bit of an overstatement these days.

except it hasn't. Yea he is no longer putting up top 10 all time numbers, but he is still one of the better offensive first baseman in the game

Yeah but 10 of those started their career from 1986-1994.

He's probably just slowing down with age (especially since he's probably years older than claimed)

I still appreciate him for what he did for the Cardinals. I would have liked for him to stay in STL but frick that contract.

I agree...frick the contract.

Still hate to see him receive less praise for 500 than he deserves. Angels' fans don't care.

Cards fans, on the other hand...

he claims to be 34, his contract runs through the age of 41 when he will be paid at minimum of $30 million

nothing ti do with St Louis.

1. people are just used to players peaking for 15 years due to conditioning (steroids). So Pujols peaking during his prime year and the dropping off after confuses people.

2. if he as still hitting .300 with 30+ homers a year this would be news.

I think his age has caught up with him. I also think there's no way he's 34 years old as he claims. Regardless, he trick fricked the system and is making bank.

How did he trick the system? He did what anyone would do and went for more money than anyone else offered. Offer me 30 million a year and I say frick loyalty

I can't hold it against him when he took the ridiculous offer the Angels made. I thought it was nonsense for him to pretend more rational offers were disrespectful but whether it is a Pujols or an A-Rod they benefit by posturing and taking the money. It won't make them more widely loved but it will make them immensely wealthy.

Hell we honestly don't know what transpired, the Cards first offer could have been "insulting" for him and what he had accomplished to that points baseball contracts unlike football/basketball are more about what have you done vs what the potential is.
Wouldn't surprise me if during the negotiations the Cards first offers were lower than he expected and thus insulting him. I know logical sense for us on a message board is stay with home team at a "discount" but reality is we would all go for the money.

He was really underpaid when he was in StL and I don't begrudge him getting paid now, but no way I would want StL to pay what he was requesting. I wish he was still in StL and have nothing against him, as long as it doesn't hurt the Cardinals I wish nothing but success for him.

I'm sure some professionals would look at it like that. I'm also sure if I was a baseball GM I would never reward guys for past performance instead of what they will likely do in the future. You just can't do "make-up" contracts. The guys who don't pan out never give the money back so you can't pay the ones who do extra.

95% of people would

There are a few people who might prefer the legacy of playing for only one team and maybe being the best player in the team's history.

Really there's not a wrong choice so long as you don't try and take credit for both. If you take the money then enjoy it. If you choose the legacy then more power to you and you'll probably become even more of a regional hero.
