I've been thinking about setting up Plex or XBMC for quite a while. Just haven't put the effort into it yet.

Haven't ditched DirecTV but have XBMC on AppleTV,Raspberry Pi, and Ouya. Look around in here
There are some setup instructions for each device and has gotten pretty easy with the setup wizard and fusion

I mess around with it occasionally but it gets old dealing with broken links, missing episodes, crappy quality.

Its easier for me to just hook up an HDMI cable to my laptop and navigate to the actual hosting sites.

i was thinking of starting this very thread today.

i just got XBMC set up on apple tv2. enjoying it so far with movies and tv shows. install iStream and you can find almost any show in existence. haven't looked real hard, but i can't find any reliable live tv streams.

does it seem like it takes XBMC a while to warm up when you first open it?

XMBC is great, except for live streams.

Can you watch live sports on xbmc? Last week I was trying to find a way to watch final 4 games on xbmc, but couldn't figure it out.

I ditched cable and bought a PC just for my TV with Plex and a Roku 3 with the unsupported App Store on it... I stream live TV from the computer directly to the TV and it works great... I use it as my media server

I just got one of these dual tuners and put it on my network. It picks up 20 channels in Baton Rouge, including all the HDs and you can view them on any PC or a TV equipped with a media extender like an XBOX. With Windows Media Center you get all of the channel listings (just like cable or u-verse) and you can program them to record a particular show or series.

does that work with apple tv?

i was thinking about doing the antenna thing for local stations and cbs, abc, fox, etc. even if i caught a bunch of other "local" stations, i doubt i'd watch them.

i'd miss ESPN and sometimes live news channels. i'll have to get one of my siblings to loan me their cox logins for that. i haven't found a way around it yet.

After having the android box for about two weeks I made the decision to cut the chord. Saving about $130.00 a month. The only live TV I really HAVE to watch is during football season. I have found pretty reliable links for ESPN, ESPN 2, and NFL Network. As far as TV goes, it's all there...every episode of every season of every show...sometimes you just have to hunt for the right source. As far as movies go...I can get just about anything. Still in the process of setting up my favorites to make it a somewhat fluid process...There is no real channel surfing from what I can tell so far.

I ditched cable several years back and hooked up a Mythbuntu system. That eventually got torn back apart to build Windows machine, but I really liked it. I have a really old version of XBMC running on my modded original Xbox. I liked Mythbuntu better, but I'm comparing apples to oranges as one program was 12 years old compared to an up-to-date OS.

Anyways, ditch cable. Even if you don't have a media pc, you still won't miss it. Another option is this Asus. Get an external SSD and install you preferred linux distro on it and hook it up to your tv.

I did and it's great, you'll watch more TV than you ever did with cable.

1. Get a tuner (HD Homerun Dual) to put over-the-air digital tv with all the extended channels onto your network. Add dual tuners to meet whatever your needs are for simultaneous viewing and recording.
2. Run Windows Media Center (Win7 or above) on a PC that is on all the time.
3. Connect a media extender (XBOX360) to every TV that you want to support.
4. Add Hulu Plus ($7.99 a month) and Amazon Prime ($79 a year) apps to your XBOX. If you want all the same garbage channels you get on cable, add a Roku box (<$100) to each TV.
5. You will need Wireless N (N900) speeds or a wired connection on your network to stream HD.
6. External hard drive or a hard drive on your pc to record live TV. TV Guide just like the one on cable or Dish or U-Verse comes free with Windows Media Center.
