I used to take a ferry just like that from Fukuoka, Japan to Pusan, South Korea. They have sleeping berths, but what they really have is a couple of giant rooms where people spread out tatami-like mats on the floor and sleep. These ferry are usually packed and pretty festive, loaded with college kids drinking and stuff. If you weren't near an exit, it's hard to imagine an escape if you were in one of those huge common areas.

That is so horrible.

A lot of times this just means it is a "night" ferry. No not like you are thinking....

The idea is that it serves as your hotel for the night. You leave late, and go through the night, then you get to your destination and sit off shore , while everybody sleeps, until the morning crew on shore is there to process you. You disembark early in the morning ready to start your day.

Makes me want to pack a manual inflatable life jacket on these types of trips.
