Powerful forces all lining up to stop St. George

We have a Senator Nevers(D) from Bogalusa who wants to put a two year moratorium on ALL NEW INCORPORATIONS in Louisiana. The Louisiana Municipal Association is on his side. The moratorium if passed would go back in time and start on January 1, 2014.
Representative James of EBR parish wants to pass a bill allowing all voters in the affected parish to vote on incorporation and not just those in the proposed municipality as is the law now.
Representative Price(D)of Gonzales wants to pass a bill limiting the time(180 days)that municipal proponents have to collect signatures for their petition. Currently there is no time limit.
With Mayor Holden and the city actively fighting SG along with Councilman Delgado, it seems the SG folks have their work cut out for them as Democrats in the state legislature try and add on additional road blocks.

I'm a resident of St. George and I oppose incorporation. It's chickenshit greed. It's wanting to enjoy the benefits of Baton Rouge... its jobs, its collegiate opportunities, its infrastructure, etc... without having to pay for it.

FWIW, "the collegiate opportunities" are not funded or run by the City of Baton Rouge and has nothing to do with the discussion.
Now discussing the benefits of the City of Baton Rouge and what a city the size of BR (230K people)brings to the table is fine.
But don't come here and tell me I haven't paid for part of it because it appears that without the revenues and taxes collected in SG and other non incorporated areas of EBR Parish, the whole thing might fall apart.

That would be the only way to interpret anyone's posts who claim BR depends on St George's taxes.

Not as up to date as I should be on this subject, but if I recall correctly, isn't the opposite true? Aren't they wanting to separate themselves because they feel BR is getting more benefit from SG tax dollars than SG is?
Seems like if it was greed, BR being staunchly opposed to it would tell me that BR is in fact the greedy party in all of this.

Why doesn't Baton Rouge incorporate areas of St. George and end this that way?
Because then we would elect members of the city council that would change the way they have been running this city.
They have a demographic edge right now in how voting goes and they don't want to change that.

I agree.. Take out the mall, Perkins Rowe and few other areas they will not keep and st George is on equal footing.
You seem to be one the most mobile people around..

I live in the 70809 and I don't feel robbed. To the contrary, I am extremely happy with the level of services I receive, particularly the three schools my kids are in.
Though I would agree with the OP-it appears that the fix is in. I ALWAYS favor the Democratic process and letting the chips fall where they may. Even if it hurts me. The people should decide.

No, but I am maintaining that businesses domiciled outside of BR pay fees, collect taxes, and are a key player in the finances of EBR Parish and the City of Baton Rouge.
I stand by what I posted, we all know sales taxes collected can be from anywhere even from people who live in a foreign country.
I realize that it works both ways. Baton Rougeans spend money in SG and SGeans spend money in BR.

A major case of back scratching going on with the author of the bill being from as far away from BR/SG as he is, and the fact that he resides in a parish of only a few thousand residents in total.
