Amazon is offering its warehouse employees up to $5,000 to quit their jobs, even as the company is in the process of adding workers and locations.
quote:

The "Pay to Quit" program, which was announced by CEO Jeff Bezos in his letter to shareholders late Thursday, is an effort to make sure that the Internet retailer's employees really want to be there.
quote:

Bezos said the offer is made under the headline "Please Don't Take This Offer." Amazon offers to pay its associates to quit once a year. At first, employees are offered $2,000 to quit. That offer is increased by $1,000 each year until the amount hits $5,000.

ETA: Although $5,000 is not a lot of dough these days

Very creative idea, IMO.

I would assume you wouldn't be eligible for rehire.

I would like to know how many employees take the money. It would give you an idea of what kind of company Amazon is to work for.

For a picker in a warehouse making $12/hour?

Honestly, that's actually a fantastic, ingenious program. I've often found that bad employees and/or dumb people have a pretty bad financial sense about them, and probably would jump at something like this because they don't have the smarts or wherewithal to do the math. My wife works with a person who thinks she can quit her job (a good one at that) and live the easy life because she just came into some low five figure settlement money, and she has kids and a non-working spouse to boot.

Seems to me that this is a pretty effective (and efficient) move for Amazon to thin its herd at a fairly low cost.

Seems like a drop in the bucket for someone with a stable job there. I wouldn't take it.

It would be pretty awesom though if you just happened to have another job lined up and were already planning on leaving. A nice 5k as a parting gift

True, but that'd likely be the exception and not the rule.

That's what I was thinking.

Also, I assume there are restrictions to this...like if you take it you can't ever work for the company again.

There are actually quite a few companies that do this

Maybe, but a friend of mine got bought out of her job at a large corporation and then rehired not two years later. Granted, it was a layoff buyout and not voluntary, but other companies offer similar voluntary buyouts as well.

Yup. First I heard if it was with Zappos a few years ago. When you show up for orientation they offered you $3K to walk out the door.

And it's owned by Amazon now...

An employee probably has to be with the company for a minimum amount of time. Otherwise, a person could get hired just to quit on their first day of work and collect $5k.

How great would that be if you had decided to relocate or take another job and have this offer laid in your lap?
