Why do some admin completely whack a post, making it disappear, and some leave it and have the "This post is marked unreadable"

Is the latter kind of a warning that you crossed the line and need to shape up?

In some cases unreadable is to let the poster know that a line was crossed. In others there may be legitimate responses we don't want to get rid of.

We will hide posts and responses when it derails the thread.

I had a post marked unreadable, but it was quoted by another poster and that was left alone-so it was easily seen and easy to figure out what my post was. why werent both marked unreadable?

I've noticed that happening a few times also.

TF, should we RA if we see that? If so, what option for RA'ing should we use?

Or should we just ignore it?

Deleting a post sends a message to the poster.

Marking a post unreadable sends a message to the whole board.

It's a subtle distinction.

That message is "Don't do whatever that person did. And we're not gonna tell you what it was."

The message is "This person just said a very bad thing."

This

The only message that sends is "This guys posted something he shouldn't have, but I don't get to know what it was"
