For a while now, Belgium seems to have been the consensus "dark horse"* favorite among pundits and fans for this year's World Cup. Recently, the news has come out that Benteke will miss out on the WC after tearing his Achilles. In light of this news, I was interested to see who the Soccer Board now has as favorite dark horse candidates.

Still going with Belgium? Got somebody else?

* NB4 can't be a true dark horse if everybody is picking you.

I don't think Belgium can be considered a darkhorse, not because they lost Benteke, but because they should have no problem advancing from arguably the weakest group and will be a nightmare to face in the knockout rounds.

Mignolet
Alderweilde-Kompany-Vertonghen-?
Witsel-Fellaini-Dembele
Hazard-de Bryune
Lukaku

Gimme Chile as the darkhorse. I was going to say Colombia, but damn, they're ranked 4th in the world.

Yep, they're still stacked

Anybody pinning any hopes on Uruguay to get through their group and make some noise again this year?

LOL.

Also think there is a place for Mirallas in that midfield.

and certainly Naingollan.

as well as Mertens.

Belgium is a such an overwhelmingly popular dark horse that one may well say they are among the favorites.

Courtois has already been shitting on Mignolet on the field and in the media. It's actually pretty funny.

Unrelated note: in FIFA14 I run train on the world with Belgium. They're so much fun to play as.

Have only seen him play once or twice but was impressed. He is really solid.

Ghana or one of the, perceived to be, lesser South American teams.

I'd be shocked to see one of the second tier Euro teams win this tournament. Too many things going against them. Climate, Travel, Cultural Environment.

This tournament is tailor made for a new world victor.

Let's just put this out on the table. Belgium will not win the World Cup. European teams have a hard enough time winning in South America and I don't foresee Belgium being the one to break through.

I follow Cagliari a bit and had hoped Roma would get him for a couple of years. He's really a perfect midfielder for a pressuring, quick attack style. Elite ball winner, fast, strong, tireless and deceptively smooth passer in the final third.

Mertens has really impressed me this season as well. He was a bit under the radar compared to Higuian, Hamsik, Insigne and Callejón but I'd say he's been Napoli's best player this season.

I'd be surprised to not see both figure prominently for Belgium this summer.

Yeah, I kind of agree. Even a run to the semis would be a tall order.

Belgium is arguably a favorite to win their group and get by USA/Ghana/Portugal in the first knockout but that would likely see them against Argentina in the quarters. I wouldn't bet against Argentina.

Sure, but they should not be seen as a dark horse. They are in that second tier of teams outside of Spain, Germany, Brazil, etc.

It's stacked by the standards of those who watch the Premier League and recognize the names.

They'll get out of the group stages. I can't see them get much further than that, especially if an underrated Russia team beats them in the group.

Chile is the team that scares Spain and Netherlands in Group B.

Yeah, I don't mean to say that I think they're not a good team but for a team/country known as being dysfunctional having to go up against a South American team in South America with everyone in the stands rooting against them? I'm not buying their ability to get through that.

If I had to pick favorites:

Tier 1:

Brazil
Argentina

Tier 2:

Germany
Spain

Tier 3:

Colombia (hopefully for them Falcao can play)
Uruguay
Italy
Netherlands
Chile

Belgium may be in that 3rd Tier but I might have them with France, Portugal,Russia and the likes in the next tier.
