I'm playing fifa and I beat Barcelona 3-2. The 2nd match, they beat me 2-1. They were allowed to advance. How does this work?

They scored more away goals. It encourages teams to attack on the road and not just kick the ball around and try to get a 0-0 draw when they are away from home.

Away goals did you in.

The highest away goal total rules the day.

Penalty kicks would be fairer, but who says Europeans are smart ?

I think the system is fine the way it is since it puts an importance on your performance on the road. The MLS needs to count away goals in the playoffs.

Thanks, had no idea of this rule. Thought it would just go into extra time then penalty kicks.

what would suck is if team A and team B drew 0-0 in the first leg at team A, then in the second leg at team B, it was 0-0 for 90 minutes and they go to extra time, where each team scores once, but team A would advance on away goals...

Which is why I think both legs should go to extra time if tied at the end of 90. It isn't right that one team gets 90 min to score away goals while the other potentially gets 120 min. Also, it adds a greater chance of not having to see penalties in the end.

You could also say it isn't fair one team has has to play 120mins away from home and the other team only has to play 90 mins away from home.

They do. Had this discussion with some friends the other day.

Specific example would be Tottenham last year in euro vs inter. Spurs go up 3-0 home 1st leg. Inter counters 3-0 in 2nd leg. ET commences spurs score 96th min, Inter scores 105thmin, spurs advance on away goals, 4-4 agg.

Away goal rule does apply after extra time in the UCL. Concacaf champion's league and MLS playoffs they do not.

Penalties aren't great. I'll take them over away goals any day.

Europeans are far more logical than we are. They decide their champions by 38+ games instead of playing all those games only to reset everything and watch an average team get hot and win the "championship" in the playoffs. That shite happens every year in American sports. Don't get me wrong though, I love playoffs.

Back to the Away Goal discussion though, the only time it's bullshite is when two teams who share a stadium tie in the first two legs, but the "winner" is deemed as the team who happened to be the "away" side during, say, a 2-2 game. Happened during an Inter Milan- AC Milan aggr. a while back.

It's not the worst.

The worst is playing 38 games, and deciding a tie, with goal differential. Now that is fricking stupid.

You decide a tie on the field, 1 game, Neutral field. Seriea used to do that, but now go with head to head shite, like Laliga.
