long but interesting

The comments below are interesting as well. Would like to know your opinion before I give mine.

I would be against such actions, as this would open the door to countless studies and statistics, narrowing down to a very select group, children that are approved to be born. (well into the future.)

Of course, this is assuming that we move this further along than IVF. Do we get to a point where all fetuses (sp?) are tested, and cross-referenced with hundreds of less than desireable statistic likelihoods, and aborted until only a 'good one' comes along?

This doesn't sound like it will end well.

Well, let's put it on a personal level. Let's say that you and your wife go the IVF method and ya got 2 zygotes. One is gonna be a 6-3, 200 pounder with an IQ of 140 with a propensity to be an LSU QB; and the other is gonna be 5-1, 400 with an IQ of 70 with a propensity of breaking the record for most tattoos.

Do you make a selection or do you and your wife flip a coin?

What is the author's scientific background? Because this reads like something a high schooler wrote for an ethics class. Was there even a link or proper citation to the main study he is basing this article on? How can you even critique his argument without that?

Wow. Good topic. I'm assuming you've seen Gattaca? I'm opposed to any type of eugenic thinking. Humans don't get the privilege of playing God.

IQ doesn't make you a man or woman.

At the IVF level, this doesn't make me too nervous. If it's taken further, then I'd protest. There is a pretty big grey area on this one.

It's at the top left of the page. Where everyone can see it. Bio Ethics. Oxford. That's in England.

The guy who played Superman is English and he had a big fight with General Zod over this very topic.

James T. Kirk had his problems with Khan also. I gather the selectively-bred ubermensch get kinda uppity and just want to kill the normals.

But what he's saying makes no sense. If a child is born with low thyroid levels today he gets treated for that ASAP. This isn't an ethical issue, thats standard of care. Thats why a link to the study would help. Idk if the research sucked or hes grossly misrepresenting it. Sure, many congenital disorders, if untreated, lead to lower quality of life. Water is also wet.

Eugenics would have ensured Tattoo wasn't born. That would have been sad.

I'm not sure I can say this since I don't believe in god but it's the only way I know how to phrase it.

...I don't like the idea of man trying to "play god".

You asked me for his quals. I gave them. I don't know about his methodology.

Yeah, it's like letting Gomer at Wally's rebuild the Webers on your 1962 Ferrari GTO. No man or woman has the ethical or moral qualifications to pick who gets to live, or tinker around "under the hood" on another human being.

Society has a tendency to cull out low IQ from certain demographics over time.

For example, the Caucasoids with the lowest IQ will eventually be mulatto or completely African after a few generations. White women are interbreeding nowadays like they intentionally want to rid their own kind, so just hang in there and allow the northeast Asians to come in and sweep up what's left.

Negative Ghostrider. Recent govt surveys estimate roughly 50% of all Americans have below average IQs. That's just something with which we, as a culture, will have to learn to cope.

Yeah, but at least 50% of all Americans are of third world stock. The lower IQ whites will eventually submerge into that stock and improve ours.

ISWYDT...I'm not a fan of eugenics. If a hypothetical couple wants only a "perfect" child and there is the capability of doing it, I don't want to tell them not to. To me, the issue is when all fetuses are tested and the gov't determines who gets to develop to term and who doesn't.
