Ductless Air Conditioners

I need a new A/C and am thinking of putting on of these in my daughters room because it is always hotter or colder than the rest of the house. Any thoughts?

I have seen them used a lot in other countries.
Saves money, but if ducts are already run why not stick with that?

Look into a mini split unit. Had a friend that had a hotel unit in his pool house and it sucked. He had one of these put in and it's pretty damn legit.

I think he is talking about supplementing the already existing A/C which most people just do with a window unit or portable A/C. He would need to leave the ductwork as is in other words.

I have 7 of them in a house I built recently. I love 'em. I have individual zone temp control and they have variable speed compressors...meaning they don't run on a cycle of wide open then cut off. The compressor spins only as fast as it needs to.
Only drawbacks IMO are finding someone to work on them if you have problems and perhaps having an unsightly air handler mounted to your wall.

Yep, I've run two $99 5K BTU Gustav specials for six years as helper units to my ancient central unit. One window unit gets my bedroom down to sub-arctic temps for good sleeping, the other knocks the heat out of the kitchen. Got my money's worth of use.

You can get ceiling mounts for them that look similar to central unit drops.

I installed one about 5 years ago and love it. I will prolly add another in my garage and my dad just ordered one for his house. They come precharged and are easy to install.

Yep. Did you have to add any freon to it down the road once the freon filled into the lines? I know sometimes this is an issue with a fresh installed central unit after charging it running it a while. Just curious about one of these.

Do not get anything with a heat pump. If you live anywhere that it gets below 40° you'll never keep anything warm. The one Stout recommended would be great without the heat pump.

Yeah, actually 2 of my air handlers are ducted like a conventional unit to catch a couple of bedroom/bathroom/closet combos.

If it works correctly, recharging should not be a regular issue. As someone else said, the rest of the world uses the bejesus out of this technology.

Thanks. I was just curious. I never asked my friend about recharging his but his is only about a year old.

Nonsense. Mine are heatpumps (Mitsubishi) and did well even when it was below 20 deg a couple of times this year. Supposedly they work at full capacity down to 17 deg.
Now if you live up north...probably not a good idea for heating.

Mine gave you a total line length chart. So many feet 1/4"...so many 3/8" etc... If you exceed that length, you need to add refrigerant as required.
Very easy to install... well one is, I had two compressors and 7 air handlers. My hvac room looks like the bowels of the space shuttle or something.

That's not bad though for what you have.
I imagine a system like yours with foam insulation and radiant barrier and you would have very low energy bills.

A bunch of friends here (lafayette) had issues with theirs this past winter. All but one have changed their units completely.
