how much to replace a 5 ton ac unit?

mine is 14 years old and finally bit the dust. i have a quote of $5,700 for a 13 seer unit. is that a decent price? also what about replacing/cleaning ducts? TIA

We replaced a 3 ton at my moms house for like 799. 5700 sounds really high

$1,200 per ton is good estimate

There are several parts. Indoor air handler / heater, condenser is outside. What part do you need?

At cost the air handler probaly run you $800-$900 possibly less and the condenser $1500. That's off the hip, we buy a lot of 2 ton 13 seer units for our apartments and I pay $650 just for the condenser so I figure double that for a 5 ton, that's a rheem unit. Find a a/c guy to do it on the side or weekend labor probably run you $350-$400. I would think total you could get it done for $3000 total

the price i have is for the condenser and outside unit. then there's the drain, pad, etc. from what I've seen, the new condenser won't work with an old outside unit. is that right?

You mean the old air handler inside won't work with a new condenser outside. This is correct because the old parts will be for R22 refrigerant and new will be 410a. You can put a different valve in to change the condenser to work with the old air handler being R22, but they are phasing out all R22 and it is hard to get parts and the R22 refrigerant is getting expensive and ac guys want to charge you a ton for it. Just change the whole set up and be done, save yourself headaches down the road. Don't worry about cleaningnducts or anything with them. Drain pans don't cost anything and you don't need a pad the new unit will go on the same pad the old one was on. Unless you just want to write a check and be done your best option is to get someone to order your materials for you at cost from acme, cob urns etc and pay a A/C tech to come do on the weekend. You will save yourself a few thousand
