Hey Guys,

Looking to purchase a cheap, weekender family van and I suck at negotiating..your help is appreciated.

Dealer wants $4900 but Kbb and Edmunds priced it at around $3800....what would be a reasonable offer to make on this vehicle? Should I just start at $3800 and see where we go from there?

It's a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SE with 129k miles on it.

Don't offer a number. Let them know that you are certainly interested in the vehicle, but that you would like to have a better price.

When he comes back with a price, providing it is not the number you like, let them know you were expecting a better number than that, based upon the research that you have done and what the competition is offering.

It is their job to provide you with a number. It is your job to decide whether or not you will accept that number.

How do I counter these counters from them then?

What is your budget? My answer to this is usually...I have no budget, I'm paying cash for this vehicle today if you give me a great price.

What number would put you in this vehicle today?

I heard this one yesterday...."It's april so prices are higher on used vehicles."

Probably true for low priced (<5K) used cars. People spending their tax returns driving up demand.

Is that the minivan that Chrysler no longer even makes? Are you sure parts will be available for it?

Not really concerned about tjat. It's is going to be used for work so will be trashed. If I can get another 100k miles on it for 3 to 4k purchase price I am a happy man

This time of year KBB doesn't match up with high mileage cars because the guy's is throwing money at people (unearned income tax credit).

Wait another month or two and prices will get a bit lower.

If you are carrying heavy loads, find an old Econoline.

If they are asking 4900.00, they can get away with 3900.00. I do this for a living

That's a good strategy. On the other hand, I have also found success with going in hard with my number and walking if they don't meet it.

As soon as you get the vehicle, make sure to spray paint all the windows black behind the driver's row and write "Free Candy" on one side and "Come See the Puppies" on the other.

Kidding, but those vehicles are aging crappily.

I would recommend against an old MOPAR minivan; if you have to have a used minivan, go Nissan, Toyota or Honda. A domestic choice would include full-sized Chevy/GMCs or Astro/Safari FWDs.

Since i do this for a living (wholesale)... that dealer probably took it in on a trade. Probably paid $2500 for it, put $500 in recon and priced it at $4900. After salesman commission he is hoping to net $1k. If you want, wait 14 days and go back and see if its their and have cash on hand. It cant age on their lot.

Go in $3800 with a hard walk away cap at $4000 if you really want it. In the meantime be patient and scour the internet for another deal which IS out there.

Where are you located? I bought my wife's used care in League City Tx at a dealership that prides themselves on good deals b/c of inventory-turnover.

I walked on this vehicle after offering the guy $800 for it. Reason for the $800? Looks like it had been in one hell of a wreck. Front passenger door did not even close and there was damage to a lot of the panels. The back glass panel was held on to the vehicle with clear tape. The sales guy did not care, he said someone will buy this vehicle at $4900

I have found a 99 Toyota Sienna for $3200, private sale. KBB priced it as $2800.

I agree with some of the other posters, my gut tells me to walk away from the older MOPAR vehicles.

Get yourself a used 4Runner...if you do your due diligence, you might actually another 100k out of it unlike a used Dodge minivan.

Found seven for less than 5k around Austin on Autotrader.
