130 years ago this month - the first picture of a tornado ever taken

April 26, 1884 - Anderson, Kansas
A farmer makes history by becoming the first ever person to photograph a tornado. Interesting bit of trivia, because tornadoes were so little understood and impossible to predict, the word "tornado" was banned in meteorological circles in the year 1887 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps - who did forecasting for the United States at the time. When asked about them, weather forecasters would go so far as to deny the existence of tornadoes. The word would remain taboo until it was officially reinstated in 1948.
Anyway, CSB, here's the photo:

Took balls to take that pic. Lord knows it took him 18 minutes just to set up the camera. Then he had to break it all down and run back inside.

That's really cool. Damn, 1884.

You don't think he might have had it set up to take pictures of something else and then BAM! tornado?

Quality is shite. Must've been an iPhone, amirite?
But seriously, neat find. I suppose that why Dorothy never said anything about a "Tornado" in Oz.

shite like this is why I don't trust nor blindly accept what scientists claim.

I'm surprised they had that many houses that close together in 1884.
ETA: Especially near farmland.

It amazes me how much more we know now compared to back then. The dumbest person I know probably knows more than the smartest person in 1800.
