Question...bought a new construction home late December. They sodded the front yard but not the back or sides of the house. They did disperse ryegrass seeds half-assed in the backyard, but it's mainly thick just adjacent to the house. Do I need to spray some herbicide to kill the remaining ryegrass, or can I get away with spreading the centipede seed and hope that it takes over the ryegrass?

The summer will kill it and the centipede seed will root fine. If you can run a tiller that would be awesome. I waited until it rained, sprinkled the centipede seeds and stomped them into the dirt.

Ryegrass will die once it's consistently 90+, probably late May, although mine lasted into the first week of June last year.... Pick the type of grass you want based on shade. Last month I tilled up my back yard and placed St. Aug sod. Use Bermuda seed if you have full sun.

No reason to worry about the ryegrass....it will die off as the heat come in.

Break up the soil some before you seed. Rake it in a bit if possible....and water. If you only use centipede seed, it will take a while to fill in (possibly all growing season or into next year). You will have issues with weeds.....no way around it.

Some folks seed bermuda with the centipede. The bermuda grows very fast and should provide coverage in a short time. The centipede will take over as the years go by. The drawback is it takes some time to get full centipede coverage.

Try to set the seeds in the next month or so & keep the seeds moist. It will require a lot of sprinklers once June and July comes around.
