Gametrailers Video Preview
So I don't know. This isn't the game that would push me to buy a U, but it isn't a bad title to finally have for the system. From that video preview, it looks like more of the same but finally in HD, which isn't a bad thing. The course editor thing sort of made me laugh. I get what he said about the courses being key to the game, but quit being nintendo and offer this basic feature. It could re-energize people's interest in this overdone franchise.
I'm a big Mario Kart fan, but I haven't really cared for one since the 64.

"Game balance is also another really important element of Mario Kart that we look very closely at and place a lot of value on," Konno said. "From the time we start working on development, thousands of times, maybe even tens of thousands of times, we adjust that balance when we're playing. At the end we come up with what we hope and feel is a really good balance. It's our strong hope that folks would want to play with the items as we have balanced them."
"We do hear, and a lot of people out there say it, that Mario Kart is all about luck," he added. "That if you're at the front then you'll get hit with a blue shell, so it's all about luck. That feature is not random--it doesn't just happen. There is a lot of adjustment and there is a lot of thought and effort put into that system, and developing it in a way that actually promotes game balance. I would hope people understand that as well."

Also during the roundtable interview, Mario Kart 8 director Kosuke Yabuki revealed that the game will feature not one, but two Rainbow Road courses. One is a remake of the N64 course, while the other is brand-new, and Yabuki teased that it's "really spectacular."
"Rainbow Road of course is a classic course. This time we actually grabbed Rainbow Road N64 version in addition to the current iteration of Rainbow Road," Yabuki said. "So we hope you look forward to racing on both of those courses."

To that end, Mario Kart 8 will feature glider karts and underwater levels, which were featured in 3DS game Mario Kart 7, as well as brand-new anti-gravity courses.

The interview also touched on customization options for Mario Kart 8. Though Konno ruled out the possibility of a track-editor for Mario Kart 8, he said it's a feature he's enthusiastic about and said he would like to see it come to life in a future installment in the series some day.

If and when I see screens for an HD Zelda and Metroid, I'll lose my load for about 5 years.

They always make a good game underneath, and as long as they give me a way to have "Basic Item Matches," I'm set. Blue Shells are fun.... sometimes, but they induce a heavy amount of catch-up capability, better known as luck.
Day 1 purchase for me.

This is what started to drive me nuts about the games. Get in first and prepared to be spammed back to the middle of the field........at best. I know that has been a staple of the series, but it has gotten worse. The NPC's constantly getting blue shells or those squids. Too friggin annoying.

If I'm playing with my girlfriend or nieces and nephews or something, it's well worth it. Otherwise, I'd probably lap them. There's no fun in that.

And the last two, maybe even three games, give you the ability to tweak the race rule sets and limit the items available. That's all you need. You can remove blue shells alone OR you can even go down to bananas and green shells, my preferred method of competitive racing.

Did not know this.

And that idea came from Smash Brothers I believe, and it started in MK DS. So DS, 3DS Kart and Mario Kart Wii all had it.
It's brilliant.
(Note that Grand Prix is usually preset and has blue shells, although lapping computers is still possible in that on medium and below.)
But multiplayer? Take that stuff out. Heck you can even do it in battle mode, which makes it extremely skill reliant.

I love RR. It makes that Gran Prix win all the much better. ESPECIALLY against blue shells lovers.
If there's any course where you can mitigate the blue shell catch-up, it's RR against casual players.

Got nothing on Wario Stadium. Greatest Kart track ever.

Want to argue with that, but I can't.
Rainbow Road is an act of attrition, and I can't count how many times that I've fallen off the track and decided to go get a snack and let the other racers finish. Screw that noise. It was usually the last track we would do, by default.

Track design has been one of MK's greatest strengths, and I don't even think I can name one I DON'T like. Even if RR is frustrating, it's always crazy beautiful and ingenious.

Well MK had the awesome shortcuts that used to make that track take like 4 minutes total if three could do it. Then it was just who wouldn't get pushed off the fastest.

know how I know you suck at Mario Kart?
RR is always one of the best levels and is very difficult to win if your drifting skills are suspect.
