taking a step back

Been in current role for 8 years. Would need to relocate to another part of the country in order to keep advancing. Could take a step back monetarily and have more freedom in the job, less stress and less responsibility. Opportunity is there to make back the money over a 18-24 month period. Anyone done this ? What struggles did you face if you did ? Any regrets ?
