Apple and Roku have a new competitor in the living room. Amazon just announced its own video streaming device: the $99 Amazon FireTV. It starts shipping today. "We need to invent and simplify on behalf of customers," said Amazon's Peter Larsen. During the presentation, Larsen went over three pain points of current devices: search, performance, and "closed ecosystem." Amazon's new hardware promises to solve all of these areas where other devices struggle.

they should focus on making their Prime streaming better instead of something like this.

So?

Mine streams just fine. How is more "power" going to make it stream any better than it already does? And most of that is tied to my internet provider anyway.

Is it going to make a 52 minute show run in only 40?

My guess, and this only based off of whats in this thread, is that means it will also play games. Like you said, why else would you need more power?

I didn't read all of their announcement, but this will almost certainly play video games too. Otherwise there is no point in going any further than the Roku3.

More powerful means faster browsing using the software. My Roku is really slow when searching for or changing channels. It will also be faster when streaming from a device via wifi. Definitely going to be worth looking at.

Games make sense. But that's not something that interests me in the least.

I suppose it will others though.

So amazon is going to allow you to rent a video from a non-amazon streaming service? Hell Amazon doesnt even allow thier Instant Stream App on non Amazon Android tablets because they want people to buy a fire tablet thats locked down to their stuff.

They showed a voice search feature, that probably uses the CPU power a little.

quote:

He just said "John Malkovitch" into the remote and, boom, instant search.

It really was fast. You can add stuff to your watchlist or just watch it instantly. "There's no shouting across the room at your TV, which is irritating. (unless the Seahawks are playing)"

fireTV understood when he said "Umizoomi." Which is something I personally cannot do.

"This is voice search that actually works."

It looks like it. Seems similar to the "free" Prime model where when I start up the PS3 app it throws an ad or 2 first for movies I can buy/rent. If the prices ever come down to where a digital rental is like a redbox rental, I would definitely be swayed by an ad for a new release on my way to firing up NetFlix.

This is why we haven't gotten an Amazon chromecast app.

I would think they would have to in order to compete. I just still find it strange that I can buy a movie on Amazon Instant and watch it on my iPad or BlueRay Player but on my Android devices I cant play the movie I bought.

Quad core doesn't necessarily mean it will be more "powerful". More cores = less heat generated while doing the same operation.

From the picture here, the device looks pretty small. It's probably laid out like a modern smartphone/tablet. Less heat is always better, especially when there are no fans to move air in the device.
