Sopranos Question

There's an episode in season 1 (the legend of Tennessee Moltisanti) with a bakery scene. An obese man named Gino enters the bakery (played by Joseph R. Gannascoli).
Then in season 2 (episode: the happy wanderer) they introduce a homosexual character named Vito Spatafore, played by, you guessed it Joseph R. Gannascoli.
How is this possible?
Did they think no one would notice?
Why didn't the writers get 2 actors?

Sometimes tv shows find an actor they like from what's essentially an extra role. Just do yourself a favor and remind yourself that none of it is real, and focus on the storytelling

Wasn't being critical just wondering if anyone else noticed
