LINK

But I thought no additional taxes would be needed???

Of course, it's only temporary.....for up to 4 years.

Does anyone think the merchants of the retail district along Bluebonnet will like having to charge their customers up to 11% in total sales taxes while their BR competition only has to charge shoppers 9%?

I guaranteed people taxes will raised and was basically told to gtfo. They haven't even gotten the petition done and they're already plotting extra taxes to help them distribute contracts.. I mean to help run a city.

School taxes will be much more, btw. The CATS tax is probably looking more and more attractive now to the Mall of LA and Perkins Rowe.

The whole St. George thing is really a shame. It shows just how desperate the functional middle class of Baton Rouge is for decent schools.

Apparently, they're desperate enough to be manipulated by corrupt state politicians.

What or why do you have such a huge assed hard on to butt frick the area in question? Your loyalty to your cause is only a tad less than Toddys efforts and postings

After reading the article link, my take is that once SG is voted in then they can begin collecting a 2% sales tax for the new city even though the new city is not in place yet. That way money will be available immediately for a new council to use.

At that time the 2% we currently pay to the parish would no longer be paid to the parish. We'd be just like BR, Baker and the other EBR cities who collect their portion of the sales tax.

The net result would be a 9% sales tax that we currently have.

If this is not the case I and others aren't voting for SG. Everybody knows that.

It's in tomorrow's paper.

Do you prefer keeping a potential 40% increase in the local sales taxes for St George a secret?

Read the bill which is linked in the Advocate's article.

It specifically says the local sales tax portion will continue to be collected and an additional amount of up to 2% will be authorized for a transition period up to 4 years.

The Advocate's article estimates the increase will generate $28 million in funding. If there was no increase why would it be necessary to mention $28 million in temporary revenues for the transition period?

Keeping a secret I don't disagree with, your logic of hoping the secession fails is what I referred to, and you have a great amount of hate for it happening.

No way people are going to vote in an 11% sales tax.

We all know that isn't happening.

I'm betting its just the mechanism for SG to begin collecting sales taxes themselves and it will be in place of the parish tax and not an add on.

If I'm wrong I'm wrong but that's the only thing that makes sense.

Am I the only one whose first thought after reading the article was this is Boss Hogg White's idea of an April Fool's joke?

Interestingly, he waited until the last day that bills could be filed to introduce his St George tax increase bill....

You still have not read the bill, have you?

There is nothing in the bill which provides for a vote of the residents of St George to authorize the additional taxes.

Of course the SG citizens would not vote for it. White knows that.

So his bill authorizes the "temporary" increase by itself. No vote by the people is needed.

The article clearly says no city, no tax.

And to start a new city the folks have to vote.

Reread the article

No vote is needed for the 2% taxes. Of course the city has to be voted on.

No where in the bill does it say the 2% sales tax replaces what is already being collected. It says the existing sales taxes will continue AND up to 2% sales taxes will be levied for up to 4 years until tax votes can be held.

If the 2% replaces existing taxes the bill is very poorly written obfusicating that idea.

I can't copy and paste from the bill's document because I am on my iPad.
