World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms

Basically volunteer work on farms in exotic places, you work your butt off to get to stay in some tropical paradise for vacation.

Friend from college is running a farm in Hawaii. They get a surprising amount of people who actually want to do this

I have friends who have done this long-term. You get paid at a select few of them, but for the most part you work for free and get free lodging and food as a tradeoff. You can go pretty much anywhere in the world, and they are extensively throughout the 50 states.

You definitely have to not mind being around hippies though. Might be a dealbreaker for me.

How much time do you get off to explore/galavant across the countryside? The website makes it seem like you spend a lot of time learning how the farmers live aka you have to stay home and work and eat, and work and sleep and work.

I had a friend volunteer to work on a farm in exchange for learning the ropes. She now has her own farm. Worked out well for her and she's happy in life.

My brother did it. he lived and worked on a farm in upstate new york. It was an organic farm that did farm to table dinner every week. they would bring in a chef an he would walk through the garden and go through the freezer pick different things to fix a large (30-40 people) meal. everything came from the farm.

It was a great experience for him since its what he wants to do. He made life long friends out of it.

they also paid him a little at first and eventually tripled it because he was doing much more than they wanted. He was doing it to learn and for the experience.

I think that this sort of thing can be kind of like an internship to learn the trade.

ETA: And yes, I think it's kind of cool too.

I mean it's not that bad of a deal. You go somewhere you've never been, work 4-6 hours a day, and get a free place to stay and food to eat. The only problem is that the farms are probably in rural areas so you might be kind of stranded when you aren't working.

It's free education, if that's what you want to do for a living.
