Eventually it will have to happen if MLS wants to take the next step, but for right now I think expanding DPs from 3 to 4 or 5 is a safer strategy. The league has been taking baby steps building itself and I don't see any reason to change an approach that has been working well.

Couldn't agree with you more. I think the low cap number and universal DP number is helping the growth and competitiveness of the league. For those that want to watch soccer just for the big names, they'll just have to keep watching the European leagues.

I don't think it should be scraped just yet but it really needs to be raised. The total salary of the Cruz Azul starting 11 was around $30 million while it was around $6 million for SKC.

Parity will be dead, but it's the only way to truly grow a competitive league.

I think it will need to be scrapped eventually, but not yet. The league still needs to grow more. The salary cap could stand to double at this point, though.

ETA: The league minimum definitely needs to rise.

Instead of a static league wide cap, why not scale the cap based on a club's revenue.

Seattle shouldn't be held to the same standard as FC Dallas.

It's, at the very least, a way for the league to ensure clubs remain financially viable and improve the on-field product.

the current cap for the benefit of the entire league and does not need to be changed to aid teams that are based in bigger soccer markets.

should the Lakers be allowed a higher cap than OKC too?

should the Giants have a higher cap than the Saints?

that's the type of thing you are proposing.

Please explain.

The MLS is trying to make soccer an "American" sport; drafts, salary caps, league parity, play offs.

Well, that's not what American's want. As evidenced by, practically, no one caring about the MLS and consistently increasing interest in the European leagues.

what is there to explain?

a revenue based cap does nothing but make it twice as hard for clubs in certain markets to compete.

do you want to grow the sport nationwide or only be successful in a few large markets?

again, under your idea, a team like the Lakers would be allowed a much higher cap than a team like the Bucks just b/c they are lucky enough to be in a bigger media market thus have a far larger TV deal.

doing such would negate the point of having a cap in the first place.

the goal of the league is to raise the profile of soccer across the nation.

having a couple of random super teams in big markets will do nothing but attract short term t-shirt fans who will vanish as soon as expensive player X is gone. We already saw that happen with the NASL.

Meanwhile, the small market teams will get turned into the garbage that is the bottom of the EPL, La Liga, etc where the only goal is to be just good enough to avoid being relegated. Except there isn't relegation in MLS so those teams won't even have that to push for fan interest.

You don't get it, and that's OK, I won't hold it against you.

How many MLS fans are in this country compared to fans of la Liga, the EPL, or Liga MX. Practically, none. You're not going to capture that market with hokey attempts to Americanize the sport.

Let the big clubs grow, put the impetus on the fans.

I agree. The salary cap is an anti-American device that should be excised from society.

I never know when you're trolling or not.

It's more the fact that I don't really care, but alas.
