Berti Vogts will join the U.S. Men’s National Team as a special adviser and Under-20 men’s coach Tab Ramos will replace assistant coach Martin Vasquez, who will transition “to other responsibilities within U.S. Soccer,” the federation announced Sunday.

As much as I like to think I know a lot about US soccer, with coaches I'm not too familiar. What exactly does this mean, por favor?

Tab Ramos took over the U-20 team and turned them into a very, very attractive side to watch, with great movement (better than what I've seen with the senior side, except on rare occasions, to be honest).

I don't know enough about the other dude to comment, except that he coached the Azerbaijani team in a WCQ group that included Russia (possible knockout round opponent) and Portugal. Cristiano did not score against his team, from what I've read. He doesn't have a great record otherwise, but maybe he was brought in for the Portugal game? In any case I guess that explains the Azerbaijan friendly.

Possibly, because Azerbaijan was pretty random.

Berti Vogts was Germany´s skipper for awhile (I´m thinking 80´s). I think he´s won a WC.

This is so awesome, getting Vasquez off the staff needed to happen asap.

Didn't Vogts coach the German team from 92-98 and won the UEFA Euro's w/ them w/ Klinsy as his striker. I could be wrong though.

Vogts was the German coach from 1990-1998.

This is pretty ballsy by Klinsmann to drop his buddy Martin Vasquez. That guy was a failure with a, at the time, fairly competent Chivas USA and then went down with the ship with Klinsmann at FC Bayern.

Classic Klinsmann

But not everyone shared Gomez’s views. One source familiar with the U.S. program, who asked not to be identified, stated that Vasquez was far too vague in his instructions to players, and didn’t provide enough of a tactical counterweight to Klinsmann’s strength as a manager and motivator.

“[Vasquez] just isn’t very good,” said the source. “He has no idea what he’s doing.”

The lack of tactical expertise has long been the criticism of the Klinsmann/Vasquez partnership, going back to the duo’s time at Bayern Munich. Germany international Philipp Lahm related in his book, “The Fine Difference -- How to Become a Top Player Today,” how the Bayern players had to sort out the team’s tactical approach themselves under Klinsmann and Vasquez.
