Planning trip to Miss St. game in fall

7 friends and myself are planning a trip in the fall from Mass down to the Miss St. game on 9/20. We are staying in NOLA Thurs 9/18, Fri 9/19, and BR on 9/20. We are trying to setup transportation for Sat a.m. from NOLA to BR and need suggestions to help plan. Bus? Rental car? Shuttle service?

there really arent many public transportation options. You need to rent a car. Neither BR nor NO are set up like a northern city where public transportation is viable. You will need a car for you stay anyway, you might as well take it to BR.

Go hard in Nola on TH and take it easy Fri cause you really need a full day on campus to get the most out of it. The first tailgate you stop at will seem like the greatest in the world when in reality the world of tailgating is all around you. Wear your hometown colors, thick skin and be proud. You will be rewarded handsomely.

With the amount of people who come on here asking about what to do for a gameday weekend I thought I would put together a compilation of things to do while in Baton Rouge from housing to drinking to food to family activities. Overall, Baton Rouge has a lot to offer to someone as long as you know what you are looking for.
Where to stay:
My first suggestion is the new Pinnacle Casino on River Rd. It is set to open end of summer 2012 and will be ready for football season. They will most definitely have some kind of shuttle system to bring people into campus for games. It will also have lots of activities to do there including pools, gabling, and shows.
If Pinnacle isn’t what you are looking for, look downtown BR. There are a few including (but not limited to) the Hilton and Hotel Indigo which both also offer shuttles to campus. These will also provide some great bar scenes for anyone 21-50 looking for a place after the game on 3rd street.
There is also a few nice places on Acadian Thruway and off College Drive that are close enough to drive to or take a cab from. That area is nice and could be a good option.
Where to eat:
Food is something that everyone has a different taste for, but I will give you what I think are some of the great places to eat if you want a “taste of Baton Rouge”
Chelseas – best calamari poboy around. Very artsy place that has good live music late night. A great spot but watch out, they are closed on Sunday.
Walkons – This may be the best place to hit up on a gameday weekend. In the shadows of Tiger Stadium on Burbank it was started by two walkon basketball players. They have crazy tent parties on football weekends and have some good food. Stuffed burger and cheese fries are favorites of mine.
Mike Andersons – Mike Anderson is also a former LSU athlete who has had the staple LSU area seafood restaurant for over 30 years. They are located at 1031 West Lee Drive and have a bar that can get fun and rowdy the night before a game.
Parrains – While I like Mike Andersons for a possible Friday night dinner spot, if you aren’t going to Chimes (see below) for Sunday brunch, look at Parrains to a spot with great food and a really good brunch menu.
Chimes – Known for its around the world beer selection and Sunday brunch, this spot at the North Gates of LSU is a great spot for burgers, seafood, and other creole menu items. Has been an LSU monument since it’s opening in 1983 and shares the building with the Varsity Theatre which holds some of the best shows in Baton Rouge.
Sammy's - Known for its crawfish and other creole dished, Sammy's is a staple to Baton Rouge dining. Always packed make sure to get their early if you go here.
Tsunami – If you’re staying downtown and want a great view and some good sushi, hit up Tsunami. Has a beautiful view of the mighty Mississippi River and has a fun bar area as well.
Other Notables:
Rauls burgers, Superior Grill, Jubans, Kona Grill, Zeeland St, Georges, Pluckers, Pasttime, and Louies.
Where to Drink
Age obviously is a big issue when finding the right bar for you so I have put preferred ages in each bar’s description.
Walkons – (All Ages) Walkons is first here because it is a family friendly place where you can find anyone drinking from 21 to 101. They have great parties for LSU games, and is a great place if you have the kids with you.
Freds in Tigerland – (21-30) Setup as one of the best College bars in BR, Freds is best known for their Freds Free Drinks (FFD) on Fridays from 8-10. $10 cover gets you free topshelf liquor for the two hours (drinks are free but not the service. Tip your bartenders). A place where you will not feel out of place even if you are a few years out of college.
Bogies – (19-24) This fratty bar is a favorite of many LSU football players and they can be seen here after a day game. It is much more of a college environment, but on Friday before games it is their “Old School” night and the crowd can get much older than college aged.
Happys/Roux House – (21-40) These downtown bars on 3rd street are managed by the same people and are a great place for those in their 20’s and 30s to go for live music, drinks, and a good time. Both have patios and small inside space.
Reggies – (18-21) This bar is best known for their ridiculously drunk customers including (86 girl, bar handjob guy, and naked asscrack shot dude). Known as the Freshman bar for LSU students this bar can give you a great taste of what chaos LSU can bring.
Chimes/Varsity – (21-40) These two establishments bring the party right next to campus located at the North Gates of LSU. Chimes has a great beer selection and the Varsity shows some of Baton Rouge’s most premier bands.
Other notables:
The House in Tigerland(18-23), Shadys(18-23), Chelseas(21-40), Georges(21-101), Ivars(21-40), Duvics(21-40), Pluckers(18-50).

Tailgating spots:
Tailgating is an LSU staple. Make sure you get to campus early, very early. It is a must on gameday and is what LSU is best known for when it comes to gameday experience. While I will give a few spots and activities to hit, the entire campus is filled with people and a great time can be had anywhere!
Parade Grounds – Looking for Fraternity tailgates? Look no farther. You will see more sundresses than you previously thought possible. Beautiful women, loud music, and kegs are a staple of the parade grounds.
Indian Mounds/Quad – This area is filled with old family tailgates where no one is afraid to share their beer or food. Good music and great food pop their heads up at the Indian mounds.
RV Lot – Some of the most devoted LSU fans can be found in LSU’s RV lots. They bring music, food, alcohol, and normally some fun festivities.
Walkons – Walkons comes up again as a place to start your day. There is some parking around if you get there early enough and walking toward the stadium from walk-ons will bring you through some great tailgate spots.
Mike’s Cage/Band down Victory Hill – Head to the stadium about 2 hours before the game to see Mikes habitat and the band march down Victory Hill. It will give you chills Tigerfan or not.
Other Activities:
If you are making Baton Rouge a few days trip and are looking for some other things to do there are plenty of things to do for everyone.
New Orleans – If you are coming in Thursday I suggest you checking out New Orleans and the French Quarter. So many great things to do there I’ll let you look for that information yourself.
Baton Rouge Zoo – One of Baton Rouge’s hidden secrets is their Zoo. A really inexpensive, fun family activity that could be great before heading home on Sunday or on a Friday afternoon if you get to Baton Rouge early.
U.S.S. Kidd WWII Navy Destroyer Museum – The USS Kid was a WWII ship that is docked in Baton Rouge. The area holds a few interesting museums that could be a great activity for a Friday afternoon or Sunday.
Perkins Rowe – Bringing the wife and kids and don’t know what to do? Perkins Rowe has shopping, a movie theatre, bars, tons of food, and a great little park to enjoy a nice evening.
Pinnacle Casino – The new Casino to Baton Rouge could become one of Baton Rouge’s biggest attractions. To go along with their casino they have planned for great pool parties, shows, concerts, bars, and clubs to be part of the experience.
LSU Lakes – Want to see what South Louisiana looks like? Go walk around the lakes with your SO/Wife and kids around dusk to see how beautiful and peaceful Baton Rouge can be.
Concerts – Though Baton Rouge Music scene isn’t New Orleans or anything, they have tons of places that play live music. Varsity Theatre, Sullivans Ringside on Thursdays, Chelseas on Friday and Sat, Superior Grill on Thursdays, downtown at Boudreaux and Thibodaux’s and Roux House, and any of the Tigerland bars.
LSU Campus While the campus is closed to car traffic before 4:30pm on Friday, it is a great place to walk through or wait till the afternoon to drive thru. Styled in a manner reminiscent of the architecture of the Italian Renaissance, many of the buildings achieve this effect with stucco over masonry construction and similar features. Check out Sorority row for some beautiful Co-eds and check out each of LSU’s great athletic facilities.
Perfect LSU game weekend trip:
Go to Nola Thursday and enjoy the culture of New Orleans. Leave Friday morning for Baton Rouge. Get to LSU and check into hotel from above. Drive over to campus and walk around campus for a while. If you can be on the parade grounds at noon the belltowner plays the fight song (gives me chills). Find a restaurant or the Union for lunch. Friday night check out the LSU lakes and find a good restaurant. Go to one of above bars and leave early enough for an early morning. Get to campus by 9am (especially if a day game. Park and walk around campus. Meet people. Introduce yourself and say it’s your first time in BR. Make sure to get to the stadium 2 hours before the game to see the march down Victory hill. Tailgate more afterwards and make your way into the game. After the game either go back to hotel if too tired or find another bar. Sunday find a brunch place at Chimes or Parrains and hit any other activities you want before heading out.
