"Why did you vote for Obama?"

"Well, b/c he is awesome!"

"Ok, what's so awesome?"

"Well....he just is!"

The fact that those interviews were done on the campus of American University in Washington, D.C. is what makes that far more disturbing. Even if the guy actually interviewed 100 students to get those 15 we actually saw, which would mean an 86% success rate in answering the question (remember, one said "Paul" so answered correctly), that's till unsettling. However, if all 14 of these remaining students are non-voters, there's at least something positive to take from this.

It was done in the only place in America that doesn't have elected senators.

On the other hand, if you ask this question in the one of the fifty states, I'd think a lot of people would know one or both of their own senators.

Hilarious that you think all those lily white kids attending a private liberal arts school with an annual $40k tuition bill are actually from D.C.

American is rated 4th in the nation for 2013 by The Princeton Review in the category of "Most Politically Active Students" !!!!

" 4
American University Washington, DC
School says:
American University exploits its Washington, D.C., location—that facilitates a strong faculty, prestigious guest lecturers, and “a wealth of internship opportunities”—to offer “incredibly strong programs” in political science and international relations. "

And this from AU's own website:

"Student Goals and Values
71 percent of incoming freshmen report that “keeping up-to-date with political affairs” is important"

This is not some junior college that just happens to be in the District. It's a school that prides itself on its students being politically savvy.

They had no clue how many friggin US Senators each state has. They should get refunds from anyone who "taught" them civics.

No excuse for that level of ignorance.

I agree it's ridiculous. I was just wondering why the fact that it happened at American in DC makes it especially ridiculous. Some of those statistics posted above cleared it up.

I was really just thinking of public, state schools and the amount of influence Senators have over them. It's pretty impossible to attend the University of Alabama and not know who Senator Richard Shelby is, for example. I'd bet there a ton of students here who can name exactly one senator.

Why "exactly one?"

Agreed. If the question was "can you name 3 US Senators", their heads would have exploded.

I also wonder how many people he interviewed. I hope he had to go through at least 100 people to get that footage, but I seriously doubt he did.

I can name a few. I'm not terribly well-versed on the members of the senate.

I do know that there are only 2 senators per state though. Not knowing that is pathetic.

I already explained. Because of the huge influence that one particular Senator, Richard Shelby, has over the University of Alabama.

There's a gorgeous relatively new domed building on campus named after him. The university has undergone tremendous expansion over the last 10 years or so, due in no small part to his efforts.

It's "exactly one" because these students I'm referring to are totally apathetic, politically. But you'd be hard pressed NOT to know who Shelby is
