I have an extra slab in my backyard that the previous owner had planned to put a gazebo on. I want to do something like that too. My question is should I go with a pergola like the first pic or more of a gazebo type with a covered roof? I like the pergolas (cheaper for one), but just how practical are they?

or this

Suggestions? Opinions?

Pergula is useless in inclement weather and is usually just a "sitting area" Coverd Roof you have more options for use.

pergolas give more shade than they get credit for, but you can't beat covered....especially for rain. But yea, pic #2 is going to be way more expensive bro.

I have been asking myself the same question for my backyard.

My house is "U" shaped with a patio in the center. I want to cover it but also want a built in "Kitchen" with a smoker. I thing an attached patio cover would hold the smoke. I like the pergola. Also, no rain water run-off to worry with.

even once you grown your vines all over your pergola, it will just become a haven for mosquitoes and whanot

as mentioned, pergolas offer no cover from weather and little shade. If you are going to train climbing flowers to it then it can shade and look pretty. Otherwise, put up a roof.

Yeah I wouldn't put the stone at the bottom. I'd just go with wood all the way down.

I'm going to call around for some estimates. Anyone have any idea how much a covered roof would run? Similar to #2 without the stone and no chimney.

Covered roof makes so much more sense.

I was speaking in reference to the pic he posted....it had a fireplace, stone benches, and an outdoor kitchen.

you can get away with pine if you cover the roof, which is much cheaper than cedar for a pergola
