Without any debate Monday (March 24), Louisiana state senators voted against an effort to remove an unconstitutional creationism statute from state law books.

The vote wasn't close -- only five of the state's 39 senators voted for the legislation, sponsored by Republican Dan Claitor, who is also running this year for Louisiana's 6th Congressional District seat that is being vacated by U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge. But, Claitor indicated that he would try to bring the bill back for a second vote later during the legislative session.

Senate Bill 70 would remove the Balanced Treatment for Creation-Science and Evolution-Science Act from state law. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the law as unconstitutional 27 years ago, but it remains on the books, yet unenforceable, in Louisiana.

Claitor is far and away the best choice for the 6th District.

We can only hope that the LASC strikes this law down eventually.

That's the sad part, this bill only sought to remove language that has already been struck down.

That said, I am not sure I agree with:

Agreed.

I'm looking forward to him stomping a mudhole in Edwin Edward's old arse and reminding him of his current position in Louisiana society.

Agreed.

This law has no business being a statue in the books. It's beyond embarrassing and laughable this bill was voted on the way it was. It's a very poor indictment on our state legislature. It should be a no brainer but the other way around.

I still don't like any of the GOP choices for that district. I might vote Libertarian if there is such a candidate for the district in the primary and then vote for "not Edwin Edwards" in the runoff.

There's a law allowing teachers and school admins to supplement teaching materials with materials of their own. I can see how that could be used as a back door. It's called the Science Education act. It's well intentioned but its back door is way too big and will be exploited and most likely is right now somewhere in this state. It's a loophole for creationism to be taught as fact.
