Likely getting a job in the New Orleans area and will be driving about 100 miles round trip daily.

I'm thinking of trading in my full sized truck for a small car that gets good gas mileage in an attempt to be financially responsible.

Anyone have experience with this? Regrets? Recommended cars?

Get a used hyundai for the commute and keep the truck so your testicles don't shrink.

Depending on how long you're going to be in this job, keep the truck and get yourself some old arse compact beater like this for as cheap as you can.

You're going to really miss the truck if you go through with this.

Not a huge truck but I traded in my ram 1500 and bought an Acura tsx

I do not regret it I get like 28-32 mpg but I do miss having a truck sometimes.

I am about to buy a truck and just keep the car too once it is paid off later this year.

If you absolutely need a truck keep it and buy a used car for 2-3,000. If it breaks get rid of it and find another.

I did this last year, but got into a four door Tacoma. There will never be a time in my life I will be without a truck. I bought a new 2013 Tacoma on 12-31-12and put 30k Miles on it in 13 months. I traded it in on 2-15-14 and got into a four door F150. The gas mileage was very comparable in both vehicles, but the Ford holds 10 more gallons of gas. I couldn't stand the small truck when it came down to it.

Buy that cheap car and I'll honk at you with your hood up on the shoulder.

While I'm not advocating only a Hyundai for the commute, keeping the truck for weekend testosterone replacement is the only answer

I make the same trip and if you purchase anything other than a Scion Xb you are wrong. Trust me go drive every low cost high gas mileage car out there. The Xb is twice the auto that others in the same class are. It's got all the bells and whistles (USB/bluetooth/steering wheel controls...) that the others do and they work flawlessly. It has a ton of room too.

If you buy an old beater think about being left on the side of the road between here and New Orleans.

The Xb can be had for 20k out the door. It's built on the camry platform and is in the top 3 most reliable autos made. Actually I think it's #1.

When it gets ragged out, for the price you can just buy another.

I disagree. I have done it for five years, twice.

It likely depends on where point A and point B are.

I live in Thibodaux and work for a NOLA based company, in Harahan. I couldn't afford the lifestyle I live near work, and couldn't make close to what I make near home.

I use the hour drive in to plan my day's thoughts in my head, and the hour drive home to jettison those thoughts.

ETA: Except for right now. Accidentally picked up wife's keys. Driving an hour back to drop them off.

early in my career I drove a similar range 100/day and absolutely hated it. now I'm in outside sales and the mileage I drive is ridiculous high. I guess the key is do what you enjoy - b/c the first job I hated so the mileage was compounded.
