The only way I can protest the CATS tax gerrymandering is to vote NO for all new and renewal tax proposals.

Yes, I know, BREC does a good job, but I'm voting NO for the April 5 tax renewal.

quote:

The single proposition on the ballot will include two tax renewals: 4.1 mills for capital improvement, operations an d maintenance; and 2.1 mills strictly to be used for operations and maintenance.

The 6.2 mills are expected to generate nearly $23 million.

ETA2: As of 12/31/12 (the latest audited financial report for BREC) BREC had $29.4 MILLION in cash on hand in the bank. LINK

Living in the St. George area, and thus having been gerrymandered out of the loop, I don't get a say in the matter.

However, BREC is the one thing that this city has shown it can do well and even somewhat efficiently for something run by government, and a lot of people (particularly children) benefit geatly from it. I wouldn't go punishing it just because of the cronyism and corruption rampant in CATS.

I disagree. The city also has proven that it can run a damn good library system. Those are the two biggest things the City government has going for them.

Ok.

Having not used the library system in years, I'll take you at your word on that.

sounds like the perfect thing to punish government over. this is their fricking fault and they declared war with the CATS tax

The city runs neither the Library system nor BREC.

Each is a stand alone entity run by their boards and are parish wide entities.

I recently received an email from the EBR Library system asking me to complete an opinion survey.

I did and I scolded them for spending millions of dollars into brick and mortar when the world is going digital.

I stressed improving the library's digital offerings and stop building monuments to themselves.

They will probably cancel my library card.

Again, Slo...a lot of people actually benefit from BREC. I see the same damn CATS buses with one or two passengers every day clogging up traffic.

Comes across to me like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

BREC flies under the radar.

Few realize just how much they take in tax wise, and few realize what you just posted. They have a ton of cash in the ban sitting there.

As someone who was big into baseball, I'm here to say their baseball facilities suck.

However, I know their soccer facility on Burbank is very good, I know Beaver Creek is very well taken care of, Santa Maria is very good, and I know they have really spent good money on some nice new facilities for water fun, etc.

The deal with the huge surplus tells me they are taxing us more than what they really need. I think we should get a tax cut from BREC.

If you live in BR, I can't recommend it enough. They have new release books almost immediately after they come out and available at all branches. They have a MASSIVE tv series and movie selection (both old and new release) all available for checkout. They also have a huge selection of CDs for checkout and free music downloads. Their reference sections are far more up to date than LSU's or any other public library I've ever encountered. It's really a remarkable and vastly underutilized service.

However, there was a lot of unnecessary waste in the new downtown library project.

On a side note, what will a library look like in 2020? What needs will it serve? Is that what we are building?

Then vote NO on April 5. Early voting is already in progress today.

Yeah, I have a buddy who took advantage of this when the first iPods came out 10-12 years ago. He'd check out CDs and rip them to his iTunes account. Built a huge music collection for free that way.

I remember as a kid going during the summer to see old movies at the main Goodwood library. Good times. Saw and gained an appreciation for a lot of the classics back then.

This I agree with and should be a major focus of the library system. They should focus on regional research and push for continued historical documentation of the area.

This is where I disagree and see waste.. Its an antiquated vision and usage of library resources.

yeah, but it's also awesome to have a free blockbuster at your local library paid by faily minimal local tax dollars. It's a good service that for the most part is worth the cost in taxes.

I :gasp: agree wholeheartedly with Russian on this issue.
And I also can't wait to vote against the next library tax renewal when it comes up.
Just because a park or a library is generally a good thing does not mean that their taxes should be blindly supported.
