Do you know or know of someone who defends(ed) Phelps or WBC?

I can't think of a person or group more universally despised in my lifetime. I have never seen anyone or know of anyone sympathize or defend anything they do-- people all political and religious stripes.

Have any of you ever seen or heard anyone defend or sympathize with this group?

First, anyone at all? Even in comments on a news site, twitter, etc.? I've never seen it.

Second, anyone know of a person IRL, on Facebook, twitter, message boards, whatever.

It's annoying that the left wants to liken them to the right and/or tea party, but I have to just laugh at that.

Honestly, I can't think of a group more universally hated that WB. Hell, the Klan, Black Panthers have their followers.

The funny thing is that plenty of talk shows and news organizations have given them an uninterrupted soapbox to convey their message and teaching in a professional manner and they simply can't convey any of it without sounding completely crazy or blowing the opportunity.

Russell Brands show on FX was the closest I have seen these folks act like normal human beings and carry on a somewhat competent debate.

not a one
even if some people might somewhat agree with their overall views - esp on things like homosexuality - they totally lose support because of the fallen soldier picketing.
one thing about those backwoods rednecks - they are really patriotic. might hate blacks and gays and hollywood but god damn they love them some 'Merica.

I have made comments while watching news coverage of them like "Westboro Baptist Church is a horrible organization fueled by hate mongering and lunacy" and people have acted shocked that I would make a statement like that about a church.

Every time it's because people don't know what WBC is. After I explain what WBC actually is they are in total agreement.

Nobody defends the WBC people.

Non religious people don't like them because they spread hate and religious people don't support them because they misrepresent what Christianity is meant to be.

So no, I don't think anyone supports them.

Not really, although I know of a few people who never gave a shite until they started protesting military funerals.

I'm in that group. I wrote them off as the slimy underbelly of American culture but I actually got super offended over the protests.

I think this is what defined them and separated them from sign holders at sporting events and festivals who are ignored.

I just cant think of any organization or group that is so universally disliked. I don't think one exists.

I defended them when people were trying to get the courts to curtail their rights to free speech.

Pretty much the only time I would ever support them in any fashion whatsoever.

That's not what I mean. I'm talking about defending their doctrine or "teachings."

I agree, I didn't want them to be muzzled. Terrible precedent.

WBC? And here I thought they were a left wing organization...

I thought Phelps had been a civil rights attorney before he found religion. Hardly right-wing.

Then nope. It's because most people just don't have it in them to base their entire lives on hate. They've actually been incredibly effective in their mission. They are now household names and espouse a message that only resonates with a tiny handful of people. It's the very worst possible form of Evangelism.

It's kind of easy to hide a church of approximately 30 people in a state as vast as Kansas and its population, and add to that the populous of the remainder of the nation.
