Had never heard of this til just now:

quote:

After the Berlin Conference of 1884 the 905,000 square miles of the Belgian Congo [now the Democratic Republic of the Congo ] became the personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium. His genocidal exploitation of the territory, particularly the rubber trade, caused many deaths and much suffering. Murder and mutilation were common.

Worse than the Holocaust.

And sadly, not a damn was given.

Truly awful.

Men "paying" for not hitting rubber quotas with the hands of their wives and children?

Pure evil.

Actually hadn't heard of this either until I saw something about the Congo on the travel channel. How could a genocide of that magnitude not be common knowledge to most average people?

because the liberal meme claiming that colonization was terrlbe means that this just becomes a part of the larger argument

Excellent study in propaganda. He actually created a commission with a nice name and purpose, the International African Society, purportedly to help the natives but they actually fricked them so hard. Heinous shite.

Wow. This could be the most ignorant thing ever said on the OT. Which is saying a lot.

I'd recommend King Leopold's Ghost to those interested in finding out more; it is the best study of the Central African genocide that has been made for a popular audience.

The problem was Leopold had no intention of running the Congo like a Colony even but more like his own personal kleptocracy.

um, the congo wasn't too much worse than what was happening in the other colonies, it was just of a grander scale. I read Leopold's Ghosts and at the back of the book, they give some figures of other European African colonies. They all wiped out at least half the populations. And also, they're the direct cause for many of the conflicts today. I'm not an anti-colony guy for the most part, but it without a doubt did not benefit Africa 1000%. There is no way you could really argue that it did.

Read King Leopold's Ghosts. Its an excellent book. It shows what was happening in the Congo, and how activism by one dedicated dude was able to sway public perception to force Leopold to stop.

The worst thing I heard of was they shoved dynamite up some of the butts of workers that pissed them off and lit the fuse.
