The ironic thing is that Maddux said he didn't want to sign with New York, because he wanted to be on a winner.

I'm definitely not doubting you, but uhh...haven't the yankees been the winningest MLB team since like 1900? What context would GM have said that? Just seems really odd.

You must not remember the 1980s. The Yankees lost the World Series in 1981 and didn't make the playoffs again until 1995. In 1992, the Yankees had completed four straight losing seasons.

Maddux said it not a GM. Remember this was when George was running the show in NY. Don Mattingly played his entire career with the Yankees and didn't win a playoff series.(I think he only went to one against Seattle)
