Settle an argument: Which is preferable, including a leading zero or not?

My roommate and I have been vehemently arguing over this while doing our homework.

For example, would you write the decimal version of -21/100 as:

-0.21

or

-.21

I am a big proponent of the leading zero (-0.21). She feels perfectly fine with leaving that zero off.

What say you?

Exactly my point. She says it's simply unnecessary and takes up time and space.

I don't need to put a zero. Leading zero is a beta move.

Lead with zero. The professors prefer it and it is easier to read next to whole numbers.

I support the leading zero because it helps point out the decimal so its not confused as a whole number

She's actually very smart. But I think she is choosing poorly in this situation.
