That's a firing!

And possibly a hate crime!

It's pretty stupid. Why aren't students allowed to speak Spanish on campus?

You know, there isn't even an official language in the USA...

And even if English WAS the official language... why wouldn't students be allowed to speak Spanish on campus?

And the article said nothing about it being a possible hate crime. That was a different story. Did you read the article?

She sounds like an idiot to be honest with you.

She does.

I'd suspect there was something else going on though. Cliques, gangs, something else driving the action.

Doesn't make sense to me to restrict speech in the hallways to English only. This would make sense in classrooms if they can't communicate with their teachers but otherwise that was a stupid move by the principal.

Considering the government cut out French in south Louisiana killing the culture and forced children into the English language. This sounds like a double standard. If the principal doesn't know the Spanish language and she request the students to speak English in front of her then they should?

I don't know the exact details of the case and I am not saying kids shouldn't be able to communicate in Spanish, but English is the core language in school.

I agree she can request students address her in English but that's not what happened here.

She announced over the intercom at the school that only English could be spoken at the school.

First, if she did is that, she is dead wrong.

Now, she should encourage both languages during recess etc.. I'm talking strictly about academics and communication with teachers.

Good thing she's a principal instead of a teacher or she would have had tenure and they never would have been able to decide "not to renew her contract."

I'd say they did a good job in firing her. Hate crime is a little far though.

There's this thing called assimilation and the thought process is that if a person leaves one country to join another because his is crappy, the person entering will immerse himself in the new countries culture and try to become a part of the whole, which means learning and speaking its language.
