Here's what I'd now do, were I POTUS.

Charles Krauthammer listed some strong steps. I endorse those.
If I were Obama, I would announce today that, in response to events in Crimea, the USA is leading a fresh movement to bring new independent sovereign nations into NATO membership. The USA hopes to make Ukraine a NATO member as soon as possible.
I would also announce that the USA will support and assist Ukraine's self-defense improvement programs.
Also, the USA should guarantee the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine. Also, the USA should announce new defense programs and initiatives to prepare for war in Europe.
POTUS should announce all of this in a speech today, and then begin reinforcement of Europe with more US heavy ground forces. Put the C-17 flights with M1 Abrams tanks landing in Germany on the news. Let's reinforce with an armored battalion, for starters.
Privately, I would talk to all European heads of state in order to advise them that, if they wish to avoid being bullied by Russia, they'd better prepare to defend themselves and their NATO neighbors.
I'd privately talk to the Polish head of state and apologize for Obama's past mistakes, then help them get that missile system in place.

Big bets aren't all that impressive when they're made with other people's money. Krauthammer sounds like a poliboard poster. No sane person would threaten WW3 over Ukraine.

If you were POTUS you'd be kicking yourself for having no international credibility to draw on, no power to wield, no real options to exercise. You'd be lamenting what could have been. You'd realize we could have had incredible influence thru energy independence, w/ ability to export NatGas. We could have organized and exited Afghanistan two years ago. We could have managed Egypt, Libya, and Syria far differently. We could have handled discussions w/ Dmitry Medvedev differently.
All those horses have bolted. They gone!
All that's left is another round of golf.

Your boy, VOR said that none of Obama's critics had any ideas with regard to responding to Russia, so, I made this thread.
If you don't agree with me, that's fine.
None of my proposals should trigger any kind of war, much less WW3. However, if you desire to live in Peace, you'd better be prepared for War.
So, I say, make reasonable and concrete preparations for NATO and European self-defense.
There's no need to fight Russia. However, if Russia is not satisfied with Crimea alone, what do you propose?

Have Obama stand up and stutter his way through a speech addressed to the nation about how we won't tolerate Russia's actions. As he's giving this speech, start dropping bombs throughout Russia. Military and government targets destroyed without warning, without delay. Screw sending troops to Europe. If we have a problem with Russia, fricking drop some bombs big enough to make them stop.

I disagree. There is both opportunity and time to take the measures I propose.
In addition, if Russia can prove that it's satisfied with Crimea AND ONLY Crimea, the prospects for any kind of war are reduced to near zero.
I don't propose war with Russia because of Crimea.

I think some of the actions you listed are likely to happen, but the strategy from the West seems to be to start as small as possible and then increase the sanctions in relation to Russian action.

Meeting privately with fellow NATO heads of state and beginning to move a US armored battalion to Germany should be done now.
The other steps can be implemented, if the situation escalates. I can see the wisdom in a strategy to escalate response as Russia continues to act badly.
Russia is planning countermeasures to the sanctions, so, they don't seem to be planning to back down. We'll see.

I love the all-or-nothing idiots who equate any criticism of the feckless loser they backed as implicit man-love of Putin.

Obama screwed up with the Syria red line. For sure. But I'm not so sure about the lack of nuts. I think sanctions is much preferable (even if they're not effective) to war.

Krauthammer sounded more vulnerable almost docile back in 2008 when he wasn't being a partisan hack:
