If I buy a long HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my tv, will I have decent streaming results as far as picture and audio? I'm not really looking for an HD picture right now, just something serviceable.

I currently have a Google Chromecast, but the picture is WAY too choppy/laggy to be workable when I try casting from a Chrome browser tab.

TIA

If it's connected by cable then the quality will the identical to quality on the computer.

It will be fine, if you run through the cable. I had the same issues with my CC, so I just switched to sticking to the cable method

I do this all the time to stream from my pc to my tv. Only problem is that I can't get sound from my tv but I have good computer speakers so its not a big deal.

You're using an HDMI cable?

Yes. There's an outlet on the back of my tv that says PC so I have it plugged in there.

That's what I was worried about. I don't know if I can deal with watching video on my tv but with laptop speaker sound.

Yep! I started with this method and then wanted to stream with out the cable, so I bought the Chromecast, so I could browse the web at the same time, but like you, ran into a lot of issues with the wifi stream. I went back to the cable, works perfect

eta: hdmi out on your laptop, to hdmi input on tv

gives both video & sound... Stalin must have an issue some where.

My computer is right next to my tv so its not a problem for me. Its also very possible I'm doing something wrong but this still works good enough.

Are you not using an actual HDMI port or something, Brosef?

This is similar to what I'm using. Its probably not really an HDMI cable, I just don't know what else to call it.

Both ends are like the one on the right. One end is plugged in the back of the computer where you plug in the monitor, the other end is plugged into the tv where it says PC. As I said, there's a very good chance I'm doing it wrong but this still works.

Hmmm... is that a VGA to HDMI wire maybe?

That is why you're not getting audio bro... No audio output. HDMI will do both. They do make HDMI to VGA cables, that have an RCA jack on it also, if you don't have HDMI ports on your computer.

I'm glad I asked now. What I assumed was an HDMI port doesn't look like one at all now that I'm looking at it. I don't know what is. Doesn't look like a VGA output but doesn't look like an S-port, either.

ETA: Anyone know what kind of port this is? Look at the side view of the laptop where the ethernet port is. It's the last port on the left.

I'm basically just replacing my monitor with my tv so I guess I shouldn't be surprised I'm not getting audio from tv. There's a PC port on the back on the tv so I figured I'd use it. Its good enough for me.

HDMI should give a good picture on your tv, at least as good as what you're seeing on your laptop already.

That is DVI..which is basically HDMI without sound.

Go to Radio Shack or pretty much any other place similar and pick up an audio cord. Its basically will have a headphone connector on both ends. They are cheap as dirt.

Your TV should have an input next the DVI that you can plug the audio cord into. Then you should have sound.

Its says PC, because the DVI connection is the connection to pretty much all new computer monitors. It replaced VGA a while ago.

That is VGA.

This is a VGA cable

Most newer TV's usually have VGA PC input, but not all... If yours does, you can get a cable like this, which will provide audio/video
