Question about old version of LSU license plates

I have one of the original LSU license plates that were offered, got it in 94 maybe? The number on my plate is a fairly low # (2K's) but it is fading and there is some peeling over the #'s-actually noticed this on a bunch if the original plates I've seen around. I know they've changed the design a few times so if I got a new plate it would be different but do you still keep your # or do you just get a new random #? Just curious, TIA
