With all the talk about Fournette and the other two backs does Williams redshirt this year or will he get some carries?
Posted on 3/13/14 at 9:23 am to bherm1988
I think he's good enough to get carries his freshman year.

No need to redshirt a RB unless injured.

i don't think he redshirts at all.

especially with LSU having a young QB.. they will be run heavy and need all their backs

Nah he'll get some carries. Those 2,000 yards of his speaks for itself. He'd be a nice backup to Fournette but I think Hilliard moves to fullback just to see more PT and then the starter then becomes Magee/LF with D Williams in at 3rd string but still getting some decent in game reps

I hope he plays his tape is really good, just hope he keeps his weight down and not get too big like Hillard did.

Neighbors and who else? If you mean Melvin Jones as the 2nd then I wouldn't really count him as a fullback. Linebacker but saw some FB action just for future depth IMO. Now unless Hilliard really impresses in the spring, I'll stick with my theory saying saying Williams winds up 3rd string. Just what I think the staff will do

How is Melvin Jones doing at fb
Posted on 3/13/14 at 9:51 am to LSU_Saints_Hornets
From what I saw in the little action he had at fullback in the regular season(haven't seen any updates on him at FB), I'd put him back there again. Especially this year since our linebackers may be the strength of the defense with their athleticism. Jones would make a nice compliment to Neighbors if he needs a break but unless he's going through spring training as a fullback (which I'm sure he is) then I wouldn't start him. Doesn't LSU have a fullback commit this year anyways? Or was that a 2015 kid?

Redshirting a RB is pointless.
If they are any good they won't last 5 years - see Ridley, Ford, Blue (not a RS but still passed up a 5th year) - and if they aren't good, then you have an extra year of a roster spot taken up by a not good player...
I'm generally more in favor of redshirts than some people (because I think you end up with more 4th year elite players than you would otherwise since I think true juniors are more likely to leave early than RS sophomores of roughly the same caliber), but with the super-short NFL shelf life, a runningback should never redshirt unless its injury related.

He slimmed down last off season. He and hill weigh the same. Fournette will be playing around 230lbs as well.

Another 230 tow truck with speed to kill

Melvin is taking snaps at tb this spring as well. Mainly because we only have two here rt now. If you noticed he was on offense during big cat.

Yea Melvin is a solid athlete. I think there's a chance he sees action at spaces besides linebacker simply because that's our strength this year.
Didn't Melvin play for Washington Marion?

Yes you are thinking of David Ducre class of 2015. And Melvin Jones will play fullback behind Neighbors.
