I box, and should probably know but I don't. Any ideas? Was it just that boxing had not evolved to the overhand punch style yet? If that is the case I would think at least one boxer would use the modern fighting stance. Was this stance only used in pictures?

Long exposure times. That was the traditional "fisticuffs" stance.

Also, people wore particular hats to dictate their profession and rank

Probably for the same reasons armies used to march in perfect lines during battle.

Because it was deemed proper and gentlemanly.

that's just mainly a vast exaggeration of their actual fighting, which had lower hands but not that whacky

it actually developed a meme in our entertainment consciousness (think raiders of the lost ark)

You serious? No. There were different tactics and weapons back then.

Armies marched that way because barrels were not rifled and it was the only way to volley large amounts of accurate shots at another army. It had nothing to do with being gentlemanly.

then why did they just stand there and wait to get shot? why didn't they all scatter or lay down when it was the other guys turn to shoot?

I know matches went until someone was KOed or quit in those days but I don't understand how the stance helped them to fight longer.

They were set up in rows. The front row would fire and drop to a kneww to reload while the second row fired. It had nothing to do with being gentlemanly. Would you have your army fire one volley and run away from the field? You would lose ground and any wars you were fighting.
