Reclaimed Wood Furniture

We have an old barn falling apart in the backyard. I've pulled about 35 boards off, which is about all that are worth having. I am working on resanding years of paint decay and dirt off and have already picked out a stain. My questions are this, is there any kind of pretreatement you guys would advise before staining and what kind of post sealent should I use. Also should I fill in the holes in the wood to lengthen longevity. I'm building two tables, one for indoors, one out. Two ladders to hang on the wall as book shelves. One head board and one coffee table. Lastly on wall decoration.
That is Mrs Va in the shorts, plus I am not sure why it flipped the one pic but the chain is supposed to be a W.

A headboard for your bed?? You want that stuff that close to your head?? I can't shake the thoughts of bugs and termites.

No pretreatment...
Seal it with polyurethane...I would not fill the holes but make sure 'poly' get down in there. It should fill them and seal them.
I am remodeling a home built in 1905 and have recovered a good bit of wood. About to start designing a few pieces of furniture myself...
Good luck...and same to me.

Wow. My wife has been wanting to do something like that. Any pointers?

Just put poly on it unless you want it to be a different color/stain. I've been making stuff out of reclaimed wine barrels and i find that just poly brings out the character in the wood.

I am collecting these right now as well to build a large outdoor chaise lounge sectional couch.

Try looking on Craigslist. I've found people giving them away here in Houston.

If you really want the wood grain to show, sand and add a tounge oil or a derivative of it like Waterlox.
