Why is it so expensive to build a bridge in America?

3. A crap procurement process. The classic American way to pay for a big project is to round up about half of the funding (or even less), start construction, and then use a sunk-cost-fallacy to get the rest. This, obviously, is not conducive to efficient or speedy projects. (Looking at you, California high-speed rail.)
There are probably a lot more, but as Alon Levy points out, it would be a mistake to focus too much on particular techniques or failures. The reality is that when it comes to cost and quality, America is doing basically everything wrong. Again, we're not just a bit behind the curve — we're ridiculously, embarrassingly behind the curve.
The fact that both left- and right-aligned institutions (public employee unions and private contractors, respectively) are implicated here is evidence that this isn't a typical left-right situation. And if we look internationally, both Singapore (very free-markety) and Sweden (unembarrassedly socialist) manage much cheaper building costs than America.
This is basically about our greedy and opaque political culture.

I think you have to look into more toll roads built and maintained by private companies , I bet then you could keep cost down

I'd bet half the cost of these "infrastructure" projects are due to corruption.

Or at least gross mis-management of funds. I think a lot of people have become cynical to highway projects when you see how much they cost.
Also, the technology to build a highway hasn't really changed all that much. The freeways built today look very similar to the freeways built in the 60's 70's ... Usually, labor cost increases can be offset by technology increases , such as it takes less people and less time to build a road now days, but that's not necessarily true unfortunately

Any private company that contracts with the Government always overcharges, because they know the Government doesn't care and will pay it.
The Government could put a stop to it, but they don't.

It's not necessarily that "government" doesn't care, it's just that contractors have to charge higher prices to funnel money and perks back to the politicians.

government procurement and contracting is broke. The privates see the gov as a cash cow. land one big contract, over promise, under deliver, overcharge, and youre set. Theres no risk or accountability for the contractor like there should be.
