I would like to attempt to grow tomatoes, bell peppers, some hot peppers, and herbs. Can I grow all of these together in one garden box? I am looking to build a garden box, but have never built one. Can I just build a box and throw garden soil in it? Anyone care to share plans or tips?

You should be able to. Just be careful not to over fertilize. Use Garden Soil instead of Top Soil.

How big of a raised bed are you thinking about building?

Google "square foot gardening." There is a lot of info out there.

Last year I had two 4x8x6 raised beds and grew 5 tomato plants, four eggplants, three yellow squash, 6 okra plants, and some bush beans. I think some of the planting space in "gardening by the square foot" is too dense, so I modified some of the recommendations. I have added another 4x8x6 bed for this season.

Raised bed/boxes are definitely the way to go but when it comes to soil, "good" gardens take a few years to come by.

That is unless you have a lot of compost.

I throw a lot of grass clippings in mine. It's amazing how quickly it (bermuda) decomposes and what it adds.

How much do you think it would cost to build one 4x8x6 with soil? Did you just build a box with 4 boards?

Do you just build a box and throw some soil and plants in?

Get 2X12 treated boards.

Or if you want to spend a bit more, this is what I did. You could actually get by with 2 high and add later.

I bought two 12ft pieces ($20) of treated 2x6 boards, and used some scrap wood for the corners supports. I used a shovel to dig the grass out, and then tilled the soil. I bought 1/2 yard of garden bedding mix ($25) from a local nursery to fill the bed up.

I have been tossing around the idea of adding some pvc hoops and plastic to my beds to protect from late frost:

Or even better, start 'em early. At least in central Louisiana I know it gets so hot that the earlier you can have tomatoes the better.

I like that idea and may try it. Thanks for sharing.

Yes.

Ill see if I still have pictures of my garden, but I just used cinderblocks as the border and filled it with potting mix. I grew jalapenos, mini bell peppers, squash, and cantaloupe in the main section. A then in the little holes in the cinder blocks I grew parlsey, basil, rosemary, and garlic. The garlic and rosemary did not produce anything, although the garlic has started growing again for some reason. The rosemary didnt even sprout so I think I got some bad seeds.

Found a pic, just got done putting it together nothing growing yet.

Don't plant mint in your raised bed. lol Its a water hog and will take over if you aren't careful.

I grow lots of herbs in containers, and mint needs its own.

As a side note, I have beautiful Cilantro and a oregano plant growning next to my patio where the water runs off of it.

Obviously I let my herbs go to seed.

I prefer untreated wood, I have standard pine boxes that haven't rotted after 3 yrs. 2ea 2x8x16 boards, 1ea 2x8x8, 4 joist hangers.

Fill with 1/3 manure or compost, 1/3 garden soil, blend of 1/3 perlite and peat moss

You don't want your bed so wide that you have to step into it to reach any one area inside the box. I am a big fan of plastic mulch and row covers. Few tomatoes will flower/pollinate when temps hit 90+.

Spacing depends on variety and how much you have to work with, typically want taller stuff on NW side.

This is just a tomato bed so I planted tighter then normal

PROFIT$$
