RA: Move to F&D, please
------------------------

This is certainly an inane topic, but it's a slow-moving Sunday and I'm hoping the OT can help me figure this out.

Since moving to California last year I've noticed the prevalence of the use of the word "feed" - always preceded by an adjectival noun (crab, abalone, pancake, bean, etc.) to describe a food-based get-together. What we would call a crawfish boil would here be a crawfish (or more likely crayfish) feed.

I've never heard this usage before and am trying to pin down its origin. Do any of you use this term, or know of folks who do? Any idea of how widespread its use is?

That term is pretty commonly used in plants, etc where there are larger numbers of folks eating at the same time....typically refers to instances when the company pays...

I've seen it used to refer to feeding college students or workers (bean feeds and pancake feeds) in the early 1900s - again, in California. The context was times were hard, folks were hungry and were fed by someone on a large scale.

But every time we boil crab for supper, my father-in-law (Californian, via Oklahoma) refers to it as a crab feed. Ditto my wife's uncle (Californian) when he serves abalone.

I don't think I want to attend a "bean feed"
