Buy or Sell?: Half of millennials more likely to lean Democratic

Pew Research Center surveys show that half of Millennials (50%) now describe themselves as political independents and about three-in-ten (29%) say they are not affiliated with any religion. These are at or near the highest levels of political and religious disaffiliation recorded for any generation in the quarter-century that the Pew Research Center has been polling on these topics.

At the same time, however, Millennials stand out for voting heavily Democratic and for liberal views on many political and social issues, ranging from a belief in an activist government to support for same-sex marriage and marijuana legalization.
quote:
Millennials have emerged into adulthood with low levels of social trust. In response to a long-standing social science survey question, “Generally speaking, would you say that most people can be trusted or that you can’t be too careful in dealing with people,” just 19% of Millennials say most people can be trusted, compared with 31% of Gen Xers, 37% of Silents and 40% of Boomers.

So half of millennials more likely to lean Republican?

a lot of people that I know my age are fiscally conservative but socially lean left. I know I personally don't care who wants to get married or whatever, but I care a great deal about debt, defense, etc. etc. each party has gone too far right or left for my liking at the moment.

Yea I feel like this is easily one of the most prevalent combos right now

That 96 election sure looked interesting...a 53-50 democratic win.

Number is 53% of 18-29 year olds, 50% of 65+.

I see it now. Misread it.

Kerry and Obama were both, in theory, anti-war candidates. Young people dislike war. Put Rand against Hillary in the general election and I believe the "trend" of young people voting heavily democratic will come screeching to a halt.

I blame the media
I know it sounds like excuse making, but the media has a vicegrip on younger people, through TV, movies, social media, and the internet.
Plus academia.

I'm 24 and like others have said, me and my friends tend to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal.
I don't care who you marry but I am concerned about debt / fiscal issues and all the warmongering that is going on.

If they are voting democrat though it shows that they care far more about social issues than fiscal issues.
Younger people tend to vote based on emotion and not their pocketbook.

"Leaning left" socially means "lacking any sort of behavioral standards". Why don't people call things what they are?

Valid points. I don't vote as it is a waste of time and does nothing to change the shitty system. Some vote pocketbook and other emotions with more voting pocketbook though. Once you start working and see all the taxes coming out of your check your tune changes.

Not really. I have my standards but I also am not arrogant enough to push my standards on others.
As long as your behaviour is not hurting others or infringing on their rights I give no fricks.

It's weird that young people dislike war. You would think they'd be more immature and would want to blow shite up, while the older folks would be more in tune with the horrors of war and why it is so bad.
But I guess it has more to do with young people being idealistic and thinking the world should all hold hands and sing songs whereas the older folks are more pessimistic and see war as necessary sometimes.

Not really. I have my standards but I also am not arrogant enough to push my standards on others.
As long as your behaviour is not hurting others or infringing on their rights I give no fricks.
For example... what if somebody is doing something that could be dangerous, but he's only putting himself in danger - not anybody else.
But what if that guy is now in a bad situation where he needs help because he was doing something dangerous. Now, other people have to go help this person.
And now those people would be in danger.
So because he was being an idiot, he has now put others in a position of danger.
It seems a lot of times, the negative behavior that society wants to stamp out is done so because it indirectly affects other people in ways that aren't immediately obvious.

Millennials are currently on a vacation from reality. During this vacation they have the luxury of believing that Mandatory Bike Paths (and 45876 other lifestyle issues) are as important to their lives as economic issues.
Alas, all vacations must end. The millenials will just have a harder time accepting the reality, that nobody has really persuasively explained to them yet. In a decade or so, it's theirs. And they will realize that their time is better spent earning a living and providing for their children then angrily demanding that transsexuals have their own dedicated bathroom, or whatever the Issue Du Jour is.
It's not that these issues are not legitimate and /or worthy of discussion, only that Reality will demand they take a backseat. Because they have a whole new GARGANTUAN set of issues that are about to fall into their laps. Hopefully they will be up for the challenge, because they are going to be PISSED when the reality of our folly becomes apparent to them.
