Is the "brony" thing real with boys today?

Looking through the beta thread I kept seeing these weird pony pictures with boys exclaiming they were each a proud "brony".
This is a joke right? It's gotta be.
If it's not I don't know if I can raise kids in this country. The gay is strong now.

My younger brother has a friend whose brother is a brony. Never met the kid personally. I've heard the documentary Bronies is supposed to be good but haven't watched it.
